In the Southwest, I can get a 1/2 gallon of Coconut Milk http://www.purelydecadent.com/products/coconut_milk_beverage.html at the Sprouts Market. http://sprouts.com/home.php $4.59/ half gallon.

And here is a blog for making your own coconut milk. http://nutrition-and-physical-regeneration.com/blog/533/how-to/how-to-make-coconut-milk/

Yikes- this product could have been so good-why do they have to add all those synthetic vitamins and additives? I would avoid products with synthetic Vit A and D like this one personally. – Hannah Apr 14 2010 at 5:00

You can get 100% coconut milk in 12 paper cartons for $13. Well, there's shipping too but that's the cheapest I've found for ready-made coconut milk that has no preservatives, guar gum, or metal can packaging.

The raw coconut butters sold here and here in glass jars are basically creamed coconut. Kinda pricy, but high quality.

I used coconut cream concentrate to make my own coconut milk. http://www.tropicaltraditionscanada.com/coconutcreamconcentrate.html Comes in a glass jar and is quite concentrated, much cheaper than buying cans of coconut milk.

That's interesting- we will be driving past the distributor on our way home. – henny Mar 21 2010 at 2:29
Thanks - I hadn't come across that before. Gonna check it out. – BestSelf Mar 29 2010 at 0:43

I have tried this product and liked it but didn't quite know what to do with it. It seemed not to mix with water as promoted. – Dirk Jun 1 2010 at 21:43
Dirk, did you mix it with hot water? I should dissolve pretty quickly especially if at room temperature to start with. – Kat Jun 3 2010 at 13:51
Thanks, Kat. How much water do you mix in to dilute it? – Grocket Jul 12 2011 at 15:07

Yeah, Native Forest is supposedly BPA-free. Some Whole Foods stores carry it. Or you can get it online: http://www.naturalgrocers.com/coconut_milk_organic_by_native_forest_13_5_oz_item_115257-p-14080.html

My co-op says Native Forest has definitely swtiched to BPA-free cans. You can find them in just about any health food store. – valkyrie Mar 23 2011 at 23:20
If it's an issue, Native Forest contains guar gum. – Grocket Jul 12 2011 at 19:07

I have heard that Native Forest brand does not use BPA in their cans, but I don't know for sure. I'll try and investigate it today.

Coconut milk is mostly water, doctored with emulsifiers, and highly processed to keep it from spoiling. However, the good news is that coconut milk is quite easy to make yourself from dried coconut pulp. More good news is DIY coconut milk is considerably cheaper since you are not paying for all the extra processing or shipping of water.

Maybe a coconut? All I've ever seen in the store is cans.

LMAO! OK, maybe this was not intended as funny, but it still was. – Eva Sep 12 2010 at 0:34
Funny but true! We have them in our yard. – henny Sep 12 2010 at 3:38
