1) Eating window-- do eat one meal or graze? Mine is from 7am to abt 12ish-- I tend to graze

2) Do you ever get tired of eating this way? I am getting frustrated already--it has only been about 1 month and no weight loss (mostly weight gain!!!) I wasnt a grain eater before-but I have been upping my fats significantly in order to reach Ketosis (sp?)-does that make a difference for weight loss?

I think I mentioned this before -- I am experimenting with this lifestyle and will give it 3 months before I give up. So far NO GOOD-- I feel bloated and heavier and def more tired and muscle soreness like u would not believe!

This may be TMI -- but my breats have def been VERY sore/swollen/tender also--and not just TOM. Could it be the upping of fats?

Could you change the title to sth meaningful? Thanks! – MasterB Feb 18 2011 at 4:25
On your SAD diet were you used to eating vegetables? Also do you have regular bowel movements. I know some here dont have regular BMs as in every day but regular for them may be everyother....in other words are you gassy and bloated because of trying to digest new veg and not pooping? – paleoprimal Feb 18 2011 at 14:36
Nope have daily BM -- i just feel FAT!! I know give it time I am trying!! – KL Feb 18 2011 at 16:01

Chew your calories and get rid of all your finger foods, which means nuts and fruit. I had the same problem....changed my diet to Paleo and wondered where's my fat loss for the first 3 months. I was eating too much. Read Martins answer to question 6 in the following link. avidityfitness.net/2008/01/12/… – GPS Feb 19 2011 at 23:37

First off, grazing or meals, that's individual.

Second: eating fat won't get you into ketosis. Limiting dietary glucose and fructose gets you into ketosis. In fact, if you don't limit dietary fat then you're in a calories in calories out situation anyway.

What Matt said. – Helen Feb 17 2011 at 19:33
I guess I shd have replaced fat with coconut oil -- that seems to keep me in ketosis. Dont eat any fruit and very limited veggies right now. Mostly GFbison(vary cuts and options)/GFbeef/eggs/raw butter/coconut oil/ghee – KL Feb 17 2011 at 20:41

1) That's totally up to you. IMO, whatever is the most convenient

2) Upping fats doesn't put you in ketosis, lowering carbs does. You might be gaining weight due to something as simple as eating too much.

If you're aiming for ketosis, or are currently in ketosis, you will be more tired as your body adapts to running off of fat instead of carbs. Personally, I never suffered from being bloated/sore; how is your salt intake? Water intake?

I drink alot of water-- I do sweat alot--so I tend to crave salt! – KL Feb 17 2011 at 19:19
Ah. I see. Well, carbs retain water, so the less you have, the more water you'll lose. I think this might be why you're sore. I stopped working out while in ketosis. I carb cycle now, with good results. I have about 100g on workout days, and >20 to go into ketosis on rest days. – Ben Feb 17 2011 at 19:26
I have been eating rather low carbs--no fruits, veggies once a day -- usually a salad or spinach. Mostly I eat GFbison(vary cuts and options)/GFbeef/eggs/raw butter/coconut oil/ghee. – KL Feb 17 2011 at 20:30

Wow. That's VERY low carb! Some people do better with low carb, not very low carb (speaking from experience). Try eating some veggies with every meal. You might be surprised! – Ben Feb 17 2011 at 21:02
I read that as gluten-free bison, and was about to say, what's gluten-bison? Oh, grass-fed. – Knarf Apr 28 2012 at 6:40

"upping my fats" - how are doing it? - gorging on "fat" (pure fat) just for its own sake? - when i started paleo i was under the same (misguided i should say) fataholic spell, eating copious amounts of tallow / butter, and wondering why i was getting heavier - yes, you should not be afraid of fat (good fats that is - in meat, fish, eggs) but this is the most nutrient dense macro, and it goes straight into your adipocytes; "significantly in order to reach Ketosis" - are trying to cure cancer? you do not need to up you fats to be in ketosis - long enough fast will get you there with much less concurring dangers then gulping pure fat

Yep I think you are right-- sad to admit this but I LOVE fats. I cd eat a spoonful of butter/coconut oil/ghee--OK make that spoonfuls!! I cant buy nut butters anymore because that is worse than putting a cookie in front of COOKIE MONSTER. – KL Feb 18 2011 at 20:24
Well I think we have our answer here. I know you said below that you can't count calories. If you're eating spoonfuls of fat, well, I'm not sure how you're going to figure out why your weight loss is stalled unless you actually log everything, including every spoonful of fat. This complaint is common to people on all sorts of diets--can't lose weight, but then when asked if they keep a diet log, the answer is inevitably "no." You said you "almost" had an eating disorder and then describe eating fats ravenously. You could be Paleo and still eating 3500 calories a day. Until you log, who knows? – RG73 Feb 19 2011 at 17:08

I started eating Paleo beginning of January and it's taken me until about 2 weeks ago to really start to feel good on it. Don't give up!! I did have to stop eating fruit and most nuts and I added in some heavy cream and allowed myself a glass or two of wine :)

Now I feel really good and although I haven't lost any weight on the scale, I've lost a couple of inches around my waist and I am pretty certain some of my fat is now muscle. I was also super bloated, tired and hungry (see my question http://paleohacks.com/questions/20406/beginner-and-hungry-all-the-time#axzz1E45NFPrJ)

but I feel so good now!!!

How active are you? If you are very high fat and sedentary you will put on weight. You should still eat to your energy requirements, if you are an athlete then obviously you are going to need more energy and lots of fat is a fantastic way of getting it, however if you are in an office job then your energy requirements will be much less. Fat is a fantastic source of energy and nutrients but like anything you can over do it.

1) Weekdays I'm on a schedule, which is psychological because of the typical work day. I get up from my desk for lunch at 11:30 every day like a robot. On the weekends I see a more random eating pattern.

2) Yes I get tired of eating like a robot during the week. Habits associated with the clock are hard to break.

I would recommend counting calories for a while to see where you are with that, the others are probably right, I find it easy to over-calorie with fats. Carb flu can kick your butt for a while, eat a potato once or twice a week (preferably post workout)

Yeah cant do that counting calories thing -- past history obessive --almost to the point of eating disorder. Not pretty. My stomach does feel better--less gas but dont feel comfortable in my own body anymore. I am trying really really hard NOT to give up too soon – KL Feb 17 2011 at 20:40

I usually eat 2 to 3 meals a day (big egg breakfast at 8am tides me over till 2-3pm). I don't graze anymore, just not hungry.

I think you really need to track what you're eating in the day for a bit. I suspect you're eating a lot more 'bad' calories than you think.

What do you mean by "bad" calories-- carbs? – KL Feb 17 2011 at 20:40

I've never strived to get into ketosis as I workout quite a bit and find I feel better with some carbs post workout (usually in the form of butternut or spaghetti squash) with whatever meat I eat. I would suggest taking a more positive approach. The tone of your posts is that you have already given up. Maybe your "happy point" is not in ketosis but with a few more "good" carbs and a little less fat. Give yourself the three months you have said you would. Tweak as necessary. I haven't gone through a full month of Whole30, but that might be another option as well.

I would at least start entering your meals into FitDay for a week or so to get an idea of how much you are eating. Unless you need to lose a lot of weight, you don't necessarily need to be very low carb or even in ketosis, though. Some starchy vegetables from time to time won't really do you any harm as long as you don't overdo them. Whether this diet should lead to weight loss or weight gain depends on where you are and that also determines how significant your gain or loss will be.

I found that I can happily eat less food, and far less often, as my gut health healed. It's a process that takes time though. With a healthier gut you can absorb more of the food and won't need to eat as much.

Typical day I do not eat anything until the evening. I have lots of heavy cream in my coffee though and if I don't then I get kind of ravenous. I keep a supply of string cheese or bonbel cheeses or some various sandwich meats at work just in case I need a snack. I used to eat all that stuff by the gross, but now a couple cheeseheads and i am good for a while.

For dinner I have meat of some sort usually, but about every 2 weeks or so I just have to have a salad of some sort. My salads are usually just lettuce or some green leafy something or other used as a vehicle for meat and a fatty sauce and tomato and the like, topped with shredded cheese, so it isn't too veggie.

www.health-bent.com has some excellent Paleo recipes.

My first 6 weeks eating Paleo were really tough. Tired, dizzy, couldn't workout because I had no energy or strength, couldn't think because I was light headed (presumably the "low-carb flu"). It was somewhere around 2 months that I realized things started to normalize. By three months I was convinced and never looked back. It's been a year (as of four days ago!) and I'm so glad I stuck it out for that adjustment period.

I tend to still eat three meals a day. My snacks are usually some nuts in the morning, and some chilled, full fat coconut milk mixed with a little pineapple juice. Although sometimes I just eat breakfast and dinner. I wouldn't recommend fasting this early though

Give it your three months then decide.
