I've been eating low carb/paleo for close to a month now. I started right after I finished my monthly cycle last month. I did have a day or so of "low carb flu" that perked up with potassium supplements. I'm on day three of my first menstrual cycle since I started and I feel like I got hit with a double bout of the low carb flu again. Is it due to finally letting go of the retained water? I've tried drinking way more water than my already very good intake. It's helped some, but this is making me feel crazy exhausted and weak. Never had this feeling at all on a period before.

Your uterus stores toxins over the month and when you menstruate, you get rid of these toxins. Your 'flu symptoms may simply be a result of these bound toxins becoming liberated. On a SAD diet most women do not feel this 'hit' during menses, but as you are now more sensitive to it, because of cutting out carbs, you will feel the effects more readily. I certainly felt it for a few periods after I went paleo, and my body continues to tell me if I 'cheat' as I have a 'bad' period every so often.....

For some reason, although I can't say exactly why, I wonder if being on your period means you need more serotonin. Perhaps an L-tryptophan supplement, just during your period, would help?
