I am located in Belgium and am looking for a good brand of coconut milk that uses minimal additives and preservatives. Anyone have any suggestions?
AROY-D is a good one as it does not contain anything but coconut (and water). Tastes great and is ease to get via eBay: http://cgi.benl.ebay.be/100-THAI-KOKOSMILCH-1-LITER-AROY-D-TETRAPACK_W0QQitemZ120542844488QQcmdZViewItemQQptZS%C3%BC%C3%9Fwaren_Pralinen?hash=item1c10e9d648
You might be able to find a dealer in Belgium.
Just remember, at least here in the states, guar gum isn't necessarily required to be listed on the label (unless that has changed recently). Also, afaik, Thai Kitchens is the only brand that doesn't add water to its product. You can always make your own: bit.ly/a1hPGi
E224 (Potassium metabisulfite) and E412 (Guar gum) are often used but not always listed. Canned Aroy-D contains E224 even though it's not listed on the can. Here in Spain it is listed on a sticker on the top of the Aroy-D can.
I made coconut milk from creamed coconut and it had about as many calories per glass as canned coconut milk does but it was very much thinner than the canned stuff so this suggests to me that every canned coconut milk I have had must contain something more than just coconut and water.
I just use the Whole Foods brand, also Thai Kitchen is one I see around a bunch -- but those are both stateside, also each has guar gum, which is a gluten-free thickening/stabilizing agent (this article was a source of some info: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/What-are-Xanthan---guar-gum---why-are-they-Gluten-food-replacements--considering-their-side-effects-/920701, not sure how reliable the source is)
I just had coconut milk yesterday for the first time ever (i know, i know).
I done had my share of coconut oil and coconut butter (cream), but not the milk.
I bought the SunHarvest Farms brand from Henry's Market that has the guar gum in it. The other brand they had (Thai Kitchen) also had the guar gum. That Aroy-D looks promising too.
I also bought a can of the Trader Joes "light" one, which has none of the pesky additives or preservatives. It tastes pretty good, but it's 65% less fat (replaced by water). You could just drink more of that one. You'll just be paying for a bit of water. At least it's a 99 cents option that has only 2 ingredients, coconut milk and water. It still has some of the coconut fat.
Another option is to make it the way Tropical Traditions shows in their video by putting shredded coconut and water in the blender and then pressing the milk out.
Anyway coconut milk is very delicious and I will be using it regularly now :)
Aroy D is a great one - it has the most calories I've seen out of everything I've tried (store brand, golden star, thai kitchen, taste of thai) as it has more coconut in it. It simply tastes better, richer, because it contains sixty percent coconut. Funnily enough, it doesn't list a stabilizer but I've noticed it doesn't separate as much as other brands. If you can order Aroy D it's what I would recommend.
Another item I like to have on hand is "Let's do Organic" creamed coconut. It contains only 100% organic coconut. It is unsweetened with no gums or preservatives. You spoon out as much as you need and add hot water to desired thickness. I use it for most cooking applications, perhaps less for drinking straight. I also like the idea that if I only need a tiny bit of coconut milk I can make just the amount I need, rather than open a large can. Oh, and it comes packaged very differently- in a bag inside of a box. In many asian stores they have frozen coconut milk as well.
