So I generally follow a 16hr fast with 8hr feed window and have been trying to do all my workouts fasted. I've been very happy with the results. With that said, I have noticed a few things and was wondering if anyone else has noticed similar changes.
If I have a meal anytime remotely (1-4hrs) BEFORE a workout now, it suffers. I feel more sluggish.
I also feel like I am way more tired after I eat now in general, like Thnaksgiving feast food-coma style. It doesn't seem to be specific to types of food, or meal size either.
Anyone have a similar experience? know why this could be?
There are some days when I have 300% more energy AFTER eating now. It makes it difficult to go to sleep when all you want to do is push-ups. I have been incorporating more starch in on workout days to try and compensate, and so far it has been beneficial. I can crash a little sooner, and sleep seems to be heavier.
I try to plan my workouts around being fasted as well, and generally feel like ass if I train with food in my stomach. It may be in my head, though as research has suggested fed athletes perform better. I just feel lighter, faster, and stronger now when fasted. Last year, prior to starting an IF protocol, I felt like my stomach was eating a hole through my chest.
I have been a cross-training martial artist for 37 years and have instinctively, always started training between 5am-7am on an empty stomach. The only times I experienced decreases in strength was when I didn't deload in my strength training. I eat pretty much pure paleo and never use carbs post-workout. I don't experience any fluctuations in energy throughout the day and sleep like a baby from 9pm to around 4-430am. Typically, I eat 4 eggs scrambled in ghee and a head of broccoli blended in coconut milk around 11am. Around 7pm, I eat all the buffalo, wild boar, organs, or salmon I want and a spinach and avocado salad. I eat seasonally, so I do eat some other veggies as they become available locally. No fruit. I never count calories or macronutrients. I just LISTEN to the body.
The body WILL do what you want it to(SAID principle). However, for each person the time to adjust seems to vary greatly.
Depends what the training is. I have been training with my old swim team recently and have to say although I can cover the same distances, my performance has decreased significantly in training, I can't stay with the others over any great distance (at 2pm, not having eaten since 8pm the day before). I think I would eat some honey, banana or nuts something 5 hours before competing - I have no plans to race at the moment though.
3 days a week I do strength training, there, I note a strength increase. Gradually I have started doing more reps before "breaking".
Normally I only eat one meal a day, sometimes 2, I eat if I am hungry. I try to wait a few hours before eating after work outs too.
Visually, my body fat is dropping and I am gaining muscle mass, which is all I wanted.
I just started the same IF fast about a week ago. So far...not sure if I like it. I start feeling nausea a few hours into the morning...this is generally after a crossfit session. I stop eating at 7pm and resume at 11am. My crossfit is usually at 6am.
Just wondering if this will subside soon? I eat mostly paleo foods...but have been feeling weak even after my first meal. Any suggestions?
typical first meal of day is
4oz salmon 136 g. blueberries 3 cups spinach handful walnuts
