I completely blew it and forgot to take the giblet bag out of my chicken I was slow cooking in my crock-pot. It's plastic so Im guessing I should just toss everything. Problem is There's like 40 bucks worth of good food, Including a nice lamb shank. :(

Im obviously worried about the heat, plastic bag more or less melting in the soup.. BPA's, etc. Is this warranted?

I feel you. The other day I ate some plastic that had melted into my macadamia nut oil. Somebody told me not to worry; that we eat plastic inadvertently all the time. But might as well toss it...money is temporary and the body is a little less temporary. – Kamal Feb 19 2011 at 1:47

LOL! That sucks! I've done it and eaten the food. I didn't have any issues. If it doesn't taste weird, I would probably eat it.

I have no idea about chemicals and BPAs and all that though.

Oh yeah. Nothing else to do but toss it. I've done that, too. A very expensive lesson learned! The plastic makes it a nice toxic soup. Yuck!

I would keep only the maybe that didn't come in direct contact with the melted plastic bag.

gently pull the open end of the chicken up and pull the bag out. Use tongs or fork to lift it out.

You may be able to find the plastic bag, especially if you did not cook it on high. As said above, gently open the bird and see what is left of it; the giblets will likely be intact. If you cannot see any plastic, just scoop out the giblets and a bit of whatever they are resting on.

If you cannot find the plastic, I would not worry about it. The amount of plastic is a likely a very small part of the over all ingredients.

Remember, the dose makes the poison - enough arsenic will kill you, but a little will not. And plastic is not poison, neither is water, but you can drown in it.

I will fess up - I have TOTALLY done that giblets neglect thing, too. I even did it the very first Thanksgiving that we hosted at our house!

Turns out there were multiple giblets or giblet bags in the turkey, so I thought that I had gotten them all. Whoops. Definitely would have been tagged a "D'oh!" moment. Plastic exposure wasn't as much of a concern for me then as it is now, but at that point it didn't stop us from eating the bird!

I also go with the scoop out the contents of the cavity and eat the rest. I'd probably not make a gravy from the stock either, but I'd for certain eat the breast and legs and - yum!!! SKIN!!
