I recently started the magnesium/ melatonin kick before bed (at Robb's suggestion)- and it's been awesomely helpful in getting my sleep regulated. I have also, however, noticed that I am having unbelievably vivid and creative dreams... To the extent that some days I wake up and actually in awe of how much information my subconscious mind is clearly storing (I've written and remembered entire songs in my sleep, scripted work emails, written plot lines for TV shows, etc). I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I know its a strange questions- but I thought I'd throw it out to the paleo world!
Yup. When I started taking Melatonin before bed, I had some very vivid, and strange dreams. I think I was taking too much (3mg). I take just .3 to 1 mg now, which still works for sleep and the vividness has gone away.
Pre-paleo, I rarely dreamed, but would dream when I took melatonin (used it to aid sleep). Post-paleo I dream fairly regularly and haven't had the need to take melatonin, so I assume my body is producing what it needs. My non-paleo wife and mom have had the same dream boosting melatonin experience.
i take natural calm magnesium only and i would not say that ive noticed what youre speaking of to be honest. I love the stuff, and feel that it is indeed an important aspect of getting sound rest, but havent noticed the vivid increase. However i have indeed heard that melatonin (which i do not take) can bring about nightmares, and generally affect dreams.
I have been eating paleo for a little over a week now and the past few nights I've had vivid, unsettling dreams, I do not take any supplments, so I am attributing it to the diet-for now. I wouldn't call them nightmares, but they both, on separate nights, had very unsettling aspects. The first night, I woke, and could settle down for about 20 minutes.
