I'm wondering, if grains are bad for me; are whole grains even worse?

Affirmative! MORE lectins, WGA, gluten, phytates, etc

The added fiber does mitigate the insulin spike, but I'd still say that they are worse overall due to all the reasons that Tim gave.

Whole grains and refined are the same. Sort of. Refined grains are devitalized and nutritionally worthless. Whole grains have all their anti-nutrients binding to all the nutrients they do have. Functionally, they end up nutritionally similar since one has nothing and one is not giving up anything it has. Then one can say that refined is worse because of the glycemic spike or that whole is worse because these toxins may interact with other things in your body and cause other problems.

Whole grains are even worse than that - not only do the anti-nutrients prevent your body from absorbing what nutrients are in the grain, they also inhibit the absorption of nutrients of other foods that are eaten with them. Avoid the grains. Period. – JansSushiBar Apr 2 2011 at 13:54
