I was so hungry just now-- dont know why ate a healthy meal. So I just took a couple of spoon fulls of coconut oil and ghee -- is that totally gross or what??

I do that too, with Coconut Butter. Don't know if that's very healthy, to simply eat fat with nothing else but it sure does the job of stopping my hunger/cravings. – Flavio M. Feb 22 2011 at 19:09

Nothing unhealthy about it. Fat induces satiety and it's necessary to proper body function. – Dana Feb 22 2011 at 20:25
I do it all the time. If I let myself get so hungry I'd eat my own shirt (although that doesn't happen very often), I'll eat a very large spoon of coconut oil. It's not gross at all - it tastes wonderful! – JansSushiBar Mar 31 2011 at 18:32

No, it was not gross. Actually, it sounds like it was exactly the right thing to do.

I do this all the time. Both coconut oil and ghee straight off the spoon are lovely. Slices of butter are great too. Definitely nothing wrong with this - besides, it's better than reaching for a cookie or something.

Ok so not as gross as I thought-- but I just ate -- why should I be starving? It was like a coconut oil/ghee dessert--hmmm that maybe steeping into the gross range--a coconutoil/ghee CAKE yummm – KL Feb 22 2011 at 19:19

Perhaps your meal didn't contain enough fat? – Helen Feb 22 2011 at 19:36

Any thoughts about why, even though a person might eat meals regularly that consist of protein, fat and maybe some veggies, does a person get to a level of hunger that is hard to satisfy? I've been there, and it is a deep pain down in the gut that won't seem to go away. I've tried the coconut oil, but it doesn't sit so well when I eat it straight. I have found when I hit this deep level of hunger, a half or whole avocado will shut it down very comfortably.

Thanks for the tip, Tom. I need to try that. That and going back to eating a spoonful of coconut oil, I've done that too. – LadyAdmin Feb 23 2011 at 3:26
Have you tried animal fats? I see that you mentioned only veg oils (coconut and avacado). – Lemon Mar 13 2011 at 15:03
Intereesting. I admit that I don't keep much bacon grease or lard around, and in all honesty, neither sound all that appealing as a go to on the rare occasion a big scoop of fat is all that will cure the rumble. I love eating meat, don't get me wrong. A spoonful of bacon grease doesn't sound good at all. – Tom R. Mar 14 2011 at 18:34

Pastured Butter at room temp! nom nom nom

That's so funny because my cat used to nom the butter when I wasn't looking! Finally I just gave up and started giving him some every day. – Helen Feb 22 2011 at 19:54
My child used to ask for bits of butter as a treat. And I gave them to her, happily. – Dana Feb 22 2011 at 20:26

I've built up to eating straight coconut oil, but the thought of eating other kinds of straight fat makes me gag.

I ate coconut butter as well to ease up my hunger..maybe my stomach can't handle pure fat as yet because couple times I did that, I had a little indigestion.

Coconut Butter is like CRACK to me -- can't stop!!! – KL Feb 22 2011 at 20:41
Could just be the coconut; maybe straight butter would be fine on your stomach. – Paul Feb 22 2011 at 21:02

Glad to know I'm not crazy - breakfast this morning was just a spoon of coconut oil (the natural stuff smells and tastes SO GOOD!)

Probably a reasonable move, that said...

Broccoli and cauliflower are amazing with coconut oil, more filling, and incredibly tasty (+ your not done eating in 30 seconds). So while it is reasonable, I don't think it is optimal from a taste/experience prospective.

But I would just go for maximum enjoyment of coconut oil, and if plain does it for you....

Sounds good. If I don't feel satisfied at the end of the meal I will either a) eat butter straight out of the pack with a spoon (must be grass-fed butter though) or b) drink coconut milk...a can of the latter has almost 800 calories of good fat.

Society puts into us a lot of pressure into what we do and if it's right or not, but you shouldn't feel gross just because you fulfilled a basic need you felt as eating to relieve your hunger, that's pretty natural and expected.

That being said, coconut oil and ghee seem pretty safe and most likely better than many other options (say sugar), and if they work for you, why not? but you could also try some other approaches like going out having a walk or try to engage in some activities or hobbies you enjoy, that can make you focused and forget about food, that works pretty well with me. Hunger is a psychological thing most times.
