Just ran into someone else, like me, for whom eating Paleo has "cured*" them of migraines. So question is:

1) If you have suffered from migraines, has eating Paleo stopped their occurrence?

2) If the answer to 1) is yes --- what color are your eyes? This is not a joke. Serious question.

*I write "cured" because in my case I am convinced that eating gluten caused them.

Why are you asking about eye color? – mari Mar 1 2011 at 2:07

My headaches have went away completely, thus far. I have hazel eyes. Interesting that there are few brown-eyed people responding to this. Perhaps you have a theory that brown-eyed people are not as sensitive to gluten or another component of SAD?

I had migraines my whole life up until now. Through muscle-testing I found out they were largely due to gluten & dairy. I started eating Paleo 18 days ago and had one headache try to start but I could tell that was due to muscle-spasms (multiple whiplash injuries from car accidents when I was a little and one last year wherein I was rear-ended pretty hard. I rubbed my neck out and it went away. My eyes were always brown, but under times of stress or emotion they would look hazel/green. Right now they are looking more green with a teeny bit of brown around the iris. Hmm

Now that I think about it, my occasional migraine problem has dwindled to nothing, or nearly nothing. I might have had one in the last few months. But I've not been entirely paleo-compliant.

My eyes are hazel-green.

When I did get these headaches, they often came on Sundays. I blamed the change in my sleep schedule, and also perhaps the absence of coffee (though I didn't and still don't drink more than a cup per day, if any). I had been gluten-free for a while before I began low-carb/paleo eating last fall.

Eating Paleo did cure my migraines, I agree that it's the gluten, but maybe it's some chemicals too. And my eyes are light blue.

Paleo has cured me of my migraines. I have went to different specialists all over and all they could do is prescribe medication for when I get them. It got to the point they were pushing loritabs on me. Pretty much just tried to drug me up. Gluten-free is the only way to be!

Eyes are light brown.

This is not my case, but my sister is celiac and her previously frequent migraines have almost completely disappeared since going gluten-free about one year ago. I write "almost" because she told me that she had the symptoms of a coming migraine a couple of times or so, but she blocked them with pain killers. She doesn't know the reason, maybe some gluten (or some other foods she is sensitive to) sneaked in her diet.

Her eyes are hazelnut.

EDIT: my sister doesn't eat paleo at all, lots of gluten-free grains, legumes, dairy...

I think I heard "hazelnut color" before, but I wouldn't swear by it: English is not my first language, and I can get very... creative. But it's still paleo, isn't it? – Paola Mar 1 2011 at 1:04

I thought my headaches went away when I cut out gluten/processed foods, but this January I started getting headaches again. I would not classify the ones in January as migraines, but as caused by changes in weather/pressure.

The headaches have disappeared again, but I'm not yet convinced I'm "cured." It has only been 7 months and I want to give it an entire year.

My eyes are brown and green.

I'm curious what eye color has to do with it. Started low carb about four years ago, and that alleviated but did not eliminate chronic daily headache and migraines. I was largely eating a fat, meat, and vegetable low carb diet, but influenced by Paleo thinking I eliminated the odd gluten item about 6 months ago. No difference in headaches. So not cured. Maybe because my eyes are brown?:)

Paleo made my very regular (several a week) headaches pretty much vanish. Poof. Gone.

I've had migraines all my life, but not that frequently, maybe one every year or two. When I do get them they are TERRIBLE BAD - blind spots, light sensitivity, nausea, severe pain - they basically take me out for a good 8 hours or so and all I can do is lay in bed.

The good news is I haven't had a single migraine since going paleo about a year ago. Because my migraines have been so infrequent, I can't say for sure they are "cured" but I sure hope so.

Blue eyes.

My migraines were cured within a couple weeks of going paleo, haven't had one in a year now. Green eyes, for whatever it's worth....

My migraines were cured at first but around certin times of the month (just before and beginning of menses) they still pop up unfortunatlely, I have noticed a connection to them being more frequent when I am higher carb, supporting the theory that ketosis may help eliviate migraines. I have hazel eyes. Why is this?

My migraines are less with paleo, but some are caused by muscle spasms and eating paleo hasn't (nor did I expect it to) help with that. But the other migraines are mostly gone. I have hazel eyes.

Almost daily headaches and 1-2 monthly migraines gone thanks to Paleo. Eyes are blue.

I never had terrible headaches. But now I get absolutely none unless I drink.

Green-blue eyes. More green.

I haven't had a migraine since November. It could very well be the diet switch - or it could be because I've shed a HUGE stressor in my life. Or possibly neither - the only factor I was ever able to definitely tie to my migraines was extreme sun glare. My eyes are light gray-green.

I only seem to get tension headaches now, which I can block with Excedrin if I catch them in time. I used to get migraines at LEAST twice a month. The whole have-to-lay-down-or-I'll-puke kind. Blue eyes.

I think I'm much like Karen. Had massive problems with migraines this past summer, being a expedition sea kayaking guide and paddling 5 to 8 hours a day meant high levels of exposure to sun glare. Even with polarized expensive sunglasses and a big hat I would get them. My migraines are crazy painful and make me throw up every 10 minutes for 5 hours or so.

My migraines seemed to be tied to sun glare but I was also eating TONS of carbs like 200+ g/day due to the limiting factors of eating on expeditions. Try eat paleo for a 5 day trip on which you must- fit everything in a kayak, you can only cook dinner- breakfast and lunch are open and eat, and of course it's 95+ degrees out and no refrigeration. pretty tough. Needless to say I ate lots of processed foods and lots of grains.

The weird thing is that I didn't have any problems the previous summer doing the exact same thing and eating the exact same foods. I don't know if there was some sort of hormone change or what.

Since going paleo, I've only had one migraine which I tied to dehydration and killed with lots of painkillers but I haven't spent long days exposed to high levels of sun glare. I'm curious to see if I still get migraines on a kayaking trip while eating paleo.

Also, I have blue eyes.

Two of my female best friends used to have migraines -- when they're paleo they're apparently gone. Brown eyes b/c they're Asian... I've observed other brown-eyed individuals have migraines 80-100% resolved as well on semi-paleo/gluten-free diets.

I did stop getting migraines after I started Paleo. I can't pinpoint it to gluten, but there was something in my previous diet causing them. My eyes are blue.

Paleo has somewhat cured me of migraines. Mine are mostly due to poor sleep now, which isn't going to change much until my kids are older. :) Though my sleep is much better with Paleo because I don't have carbs coursing through me keeping me all energized on its rocket-fuel-type effects.

My eyes are blue.

I would get occasional migraines but not very often. But I would wake up in the middle of the night and not be able to sleep very well. After going paleo, headaches and early wake-up calls went away. When I do nibble on a gluten filled cookie or a slice of bread, I get an instant headache. My eyes are blue-green (depending on my mood).

Yes. Migranes have been significantly reduced, if not eliminated, and I have hazel eyes.

I often had headaches related to sinus problems. Last January they became what I guess you would call migrains. I never take meds but then weakened and had to resort to something. Since being on Paleo I have noticed, I breath better, sleep less and no longer have headaches unless I am very stressed. I have very light green eyes. So.......is there an outcome here?

I must say - this question has peaked my interest! My mom had severe migraines for years - her eyes were hazel. She lived on carbs and was ALWAYS "suffering from low blood sugar".

I have complex migraines (plus chiari malformation headaches). After a number of years and drugs, I have gone paleo (about a year now) and my headaches are down to about 1 per week. And . . . my eyes are hazel, usually more green.

Brown eyes, and paleo now for three weeks. So far I've not noticed a change. I hope I will see it with time, as this was my main reason for trying paleo.

Brown eyes, had migraines several times a week since I was about 7. I've eating Paleo for 5 days now, and so far I woke up with a horrible migraine every day. I am blaming in on crb flu, hope that's true!

Brown eyes. I've been eating strict paleo for years and it has had no effect on my migraines. However high levels of ketosis (attained with restricted protein and near-zero carbs) reduce their intensity and frequency.

Migraines disappeared for about 6 months after paleo and gluten free...but I've had two in the past three months. Stress seemed to be trigger. Light blue eyes.

I had my first migraine yesterday in years and it was the most bizarre one I've ever had. It actually started with me seeing flashing zig-zag lines. Then about 15 minutes later the headache hit. In my case, the trigger was a colonic that I tried for the first, and last, time. Fortunately for me, (but unfortunately for my husband - he has chronic migraines), he gave me a Maxalt which took care of it. I have light hazel (grey, blue, green) eyes. Husband has brown eyes and does not eat paleo. He refuses to connect his food to his migraines.

Hazel eyes. Usually get a migraine once every month, almost always on the weekend. I went relatively low carb before Paleo about a year ago and the migraine frequency went down. Went Paleo about 3 months ago with some dairy but strictly no grains. I have not had a migraine since. Hoping it was the gluten.
