So we had a health fair today at my place of employment. (I helped organize it since I am on the Health & Wellness Committee). One of the booths at the event was measuring bodyfat percentage. So when they saw that mine was 10.1%, they were super impressed, saying that I was lowest of anyone so far today!

them: "Wow! What do you eat?"

me: "Lots of butter and heavy cream".

Funny too, because I get a lot of people jabbin me about putting butter on everything and pouring full fat heavy cream into my coffee. Those same people were a bit confounded when they found out that I had the lowest bodyfat percentage of anyone in the company.

So here is my question. Should I replace my pasture butter and organic heavy cream with vegetable oil based margarines and soy based non dairy creamers laced with chemicals? I'm so vexed about this.

In fact, I recommend chasing after the pesticide sprays. Think of it as a really intense shower. – Jonesy Feb 24 2011 at 22:33
You also forgot the fruit – DudleyP Feb 24 2011 at 23:30
if you feel for. Try using less butter and cream. or only butter. experiment a bit with the amount of fat. Dont use cheap vegetable oils. If you wannt go for premium high class labeled vegetable oil. Or you avoid diary fat for a while and go on nuts soaked and fatty fruit avocado(fruit?) and coconut or durian. just try a bit out, and explore for new things* – oak0y Feb 25 2011 at 12:03

That's the sort of wake-up call that might sink in for your co-workers. Something like that will open them up to paleo more than any amount of convincing you may attempt.

hilarious Travis. As you were typing this... I was typing my reply to Helen's comment about people connecting the dots. We are on the same page here. – Jack Kronk Feb 25 2011 at 2:47

Honestly, I think you should just stick with artificial-imitation-real-butter-flavor and leave all that organic, healthy rubbish aside. Don't you know it'll make you fat?

Hah, I had something like this happen this weekend. I was commenting on the tablespoon of almond butter -- a tablespoon's worth, not even a scant fraction of the total fat I enjoyed with my breakfast! -- I enjoyed with my breakfast, and the girl I was talking to, her eyes got huge, and she said slowly, enunciating every word, "Don't you know that stuff is /soooo/ high in fat?"

Me: "Yes. Delicious, delicious fat."

Her (hesitatingly): "Do...do you exercise?"

I don't. x) Not other than walking to and fro to class and long wanderings when I'm bored. Poor girl I was talking to was starving herself and cardio-ing herself half to death and "fell off the wagon this weekend" but she'll "start Weight Watchers again next week" before her trip to Hawaii. I feel really, truly bad for her restrictive lifestyle.

But don't eat fat! It'll swell you up like a corpulent balloon right proper before you can even blink. Bewares, bewares!

Just because you're lean doesn't mean you're healthy. All that arterycloggingsaturatedfat will catch up to you!

you are correct mari, and being that you are paleo, i will immediately assume you are speaking (typing) sarcastically. however, i will also offer that just because i am lean doesn't mean i am unhealthy either. ah hah! – Jack Kronk Feb 24 2011 at 22:51
yes that was sarcastic. I eat plenty of cream and butter myself :). – mari Feb 24 2011 at 23:25
oh god, I thought you were serious for a second 0.o It's so hard to rid yourself of this fear though, and its hard to know if i'm getting an objective view from people in the paleo community – Jayan Feb 25 2011 at 1:14

I'm going to upvote this because i have a similar situation at my company right now with my bacon consumption compared to theirs and the same SAD folks are confounded about this.

If you keep at it, maybe, at some point their cognitive dissonance will reach critical mass and they'll have a conversion experience. But I wouldn't count on it. – Helen Feb 24 2011 at 23:33

Ha! Fantastic comment Helen! I often wonder this myself, as I'm sure many of us do... something like... when are people gonna connect the dots? They see what I eat. They see that I am fit and muscular and healthy. Are they ever gonna put 2 and 2 together and realize that there MIGHT actually be something behind it. Sadly, they usually just laugh it off or tell me that I should be careful eating too much butter. Astounding. – Jack Kronk Feb 25 2011 at 2:44

I'm still trying to get my fiancée to understand why me cooking with fat is 100% healthier than his"I'm Fully Aware It's Not Butter"tub of chemicals. – bittykitty Feb 25 2011 at 10:03

obviously you are at a much higher risk of obesity eating all that butter and cream. try a sugar-free fat-free klondike bar if you feel you need to indulge.

You are genetically lucky and a bad influence on those who are not so fortunate. Shame on you! Besides, I'll bet you exercise a lot, so you burn it off. Calories-in, calories-out. (Sarcasm, obviously.)

They see what I eat, a pound of red meat for lunch at work after my workout and assume that I can only eat this way because I work out. Or that I just have the right genes. Never worth arguing, I've found. – rar Feb 25 2011 at 18:17

I'm still pretty new to paleo... I thought dairy is a no-go.

ps I'm not being sarcastic :)

There is no One Paleo Way. Some people find that dairy works for them. For others, it's a trigger food and/or an allergen. YMMV – ScottMGS Feb 26 2011 at 0:48
Alot of us subscribe to Panu or Primal, Primal being dairy friendly, PaNu being about eating what works metabolically for you, but generally ends up being similar to primal, with caveats for things like dairy that you should see how you do with it. – Stephen-Aegis Mar 5 2011 at 13:00
