If you are eating copious amount of pastured dairy - eggs, whole milk, butter/cream - do you think you need to eat fish or take Cod Liver Oil for essential fatty acids? Given the goal (as per Panu, Whole Health Source) to keep total PUFA under 4%, I trying to avoid fish or fish supplements.

As Dr Harris has recently written, it might be better to reduce PUFA consumption to get O3-O6 ratios correct rather than increase O3 intake.

Plus I HATE fish :-)

dairy isnt necessary, simply avoiding omega 6 and eating only grassfed meat will allow you to achieve good omega3-6 ratio. No fish required. No supplementation required.

Omega3 eggs and Liver are icing on the Steak.

I'll go with that answer, Stephen-Aegis, but what of the person who is just starting out and likely horribly out of balance? Would you recommend overdoing the O3 in order to correct the imbalance or do you think it'll fix over time? – Jon McCaffrey Feb 25 2011 at 0:11
love "icing on the steak"! – Thumper Feb 25 2011 at 0:18
Depends on patience and goal. I like cod liver oil as food...But in the meantime shoot for other high omega 3 foods, enhanced eggs etc – Stephen-Aegis Feb 25 2011 at 1:26

Eggs aren't dairy.

Right! (Unless we can find a source for Omega-3 chicken milk.) – ScottMGS Feb 26 2011 at 0:40

You're going to have to have a better listing of your estimated O6 and O3 intake to get an idea. Simply ballparking it and stating "copious" amounts of such and such isn't terribly accurate as guidance.

This whole issue with PUFA overconsumption is not clear to me. I asked Kurt Harris whether it is possible to over consume Omega 3 from just eating fish, and he said that he thinks yes. So, now I need to supplement with Omega 6 to make sure my PUFA are in balance? I can eat fish everyday, and even twice per day.

Thanks for this response and the link to his comment. Just like you eat a lot of fish, I eat a lot of eggs, so the concern I had was the same as yours. I don't think you want to take in more O-6. Dr Harris and Stephan Guyenet both state that total PUFA consumption should be less than 4%. It seems like the right answer is reduce consumption down to the 4% level, not balance at a much higher level. This is my dilemma too and why I asked my question. Thanks again! – Aravind Feb 25 2011 at 5:25
