We all avoid grains. But, why? There is an unlimited amount of reasons to do so. I want to know why YOU avoid grains. We all learn better when we here opinions from a variety of people. Do you avoid them simply because its a non paleo food or have you had specific problems with them? Maybe you have way more energy or have lost weight.
Tell us why YOU avoid them - not why your friend Fred avoids them.
I avoid grains because I love them. But love means never having to say you're sorry, so I try to avoid all contact nowadays.
Really though, I second the "grain as crack" idea. I absolutely love(d) stuffing my face full of bread, chips, and candy. No noticeable acute grain detriments for me though.
Five reasons i do not eat grains (although soba noodles in japan were seriously delicious):
allows me to eat more roasted chickens
makes life generally simpler as far as shopping, cooking, etc.
allows me to eat more at a meal without any "heavy" feeling later. Bloat some call it. whatever. I just never feel bad after eating now (which sounds funny when you stop and read that, but its true that so many people look at eating as this thing that will make them feel WORSE!)
keeps me from binging on crap. With grain foods i never had perspective on how much energywise i was consuming so, bam, whole bag of chips, or giant bowl of cereal, blah blah just goes down too easily. Not natural.
Makes me confident that i am healthier and lead a happier life. Just knowing that goes a long, long way.
1 - All headaches have gone away since dropping grains from my diet.
2 - All heartburn has gone away since dropping grains from my diet.
3 - I'm 25lbs lighter.
4 - I've learned what they do to my body.
5 - I'm not a grazing herd animal; I've learned not to eat like one.
I am heading towards insulin issues. I didn't know it, and I am not terribly overweight, but I thought that I was having hypoglycemia, but when I purchased a glucometer, I found out that I was at the high end of normal. I have also listened to every one of Robb Wolf's podcast and he really sells how bad they are. I do notice digestive issues when I have them, so I avoid them completely. I definitely have much more of a flat belly without them. I know about all of the inflammation that they cause in the body and based on the nutrition, I don't think that they are worth it at all. Since I have been off of them, I don't crave them. I actually think that they sound disgusting! From a girl, that ate pizza every day :) Woo hoo!
I am also a slave to the "crack" that is processed carbs. I'm almost 40 years old and have always had weight issues. I've never been successful in losing more than 20 pounds and keeping it off until I cut the grains out. I'm down 45 pounds now and it's been pretty easy. Even easier since I really didn't realize I had any physical issues with grains until I quit eating them and then had the occasional cheat meal where it made me sick as a dog for two days after. Never have gas or bloating, cramps and general lethargy while eating paleo.
