What activity/sport/exercise makes you feel the best? What do you use it for: strength, endurance, flexibility, stress reduction, competition, work ability, pain management, rehabilitation, hobby, fun factor, etc? Do you relate it to a Paleo lifestyle? If so, how?

What's your gender?

Too many questions? (grin)

It will be interesting to build a profile of what sorts of activities Paleo-ers engage in, and whether there is a gender difference in preferences and activities. Thanks!

This male enjoys hiking more than any other type of exercise. In fact, it's enjoyable enough that I don't think of it as exercise at all.

Male.

I like walking and sprinting plus body weight exercises and weight lifting to keep fit and work off stress.

I like cycling and inline skating because they're fun and I like going fast.

I'm not a great swimmer, but time in the pool or lake are both great for relaxation.

Do you ever do the McDonald's Late Night ride in the city? I want to do it every year and never actually sign up. – sherpamelissa Feb 27 2011 at 1:54

@sherpamelissa: No, I haven't done the late ride. I'm not much on riding at night. Have you ever done the Boulevard Lakefront Tour? I've ridden in it several times. – Chickenosaurus Rex Feb 27 2011 at 16:37

Hiking. Just love being outdoors, and it's great for stress reduction - feels like a mini vacation. And yeah, it seems very "paleo". People used to "hike" every day - seems a little silly that we have a special term for it, and consider it an "activity".

I love to walk and walk and walk. (which is convenient as I have always lived car free.) I like playing in the woods--barefoot strolls when it is quiet and damp, vainly attempting to outrun deer/squirrel/etc when they cross my path, trying to get lost, climbing trees. I love going to the beach and scrambling over rocks, sprinting as hard as I can on the sand, swimming in calm lakes/gently flowing rivers/the pounding ocean surf. I also really like shoveling snow and helping people move. I do these for a mix of almost all the reasons that you listed, with the main one being because these are things that have consistently, since childhood, made me feel effing awesome.

I am female.

Cycling on a Mountain Bike.

Bombing downhill in the summer on a ski slope is my biggest thrill. But where I live now that's not possible. So second fave is single track through the forest.

I'm a wanderer. I like to meander hither and yon, though mostly to and from class. Sometimes, when I think I'm going to miss my bus, I take off in a full-blown sprint. Absolutely exhilarating, though I've had some close calls. ;)

I am female, and a few months ago, I fell in love with rock climbing. It's fun, it's a great upper-body work out, it engages the problem-solving faculties, and best of all, it makes me feel like a monkey. A strong-gripped monkey.

My answer is will not shock anyone but I enjoy Crossfit 3-4x/week. I also walk a couple miles when I can and play Softball in a Sunday league.

My favorite sport is definitely tennis, even though I'm not convinced it's optimal for health. There's a lot of pounding and stress on your body. I play almost every day for 3 plus hours, so its taking its toll. I love it though, so I will continue to play.

For health, my favorite thing to do is walk. I walk everywhere. It makes me feel good and is so much better than sitting down.

I'm female.

I love bike riding more than anything and don't do it enough! I just love the feel of it, the wind and my bike and the hills and I just feel so light and free! Last year I did a sprint triathlon and in the swim/run pics I look determined, but in the biking picture I have the biggest grin on my face. :D

In the gym, I love to lift heavy. It makes me feel tough and strong. Yesterday we did front/back squats, then cleans/thrusters/back squat/overhead squat. It was awesome!

Pushups also make me feel great. I am so impressed with myself every time I do them. LOL.

I am not a fan of running most of the time, but a run in a nice summer rain is always pretty cool.

Male. Swimming, rowing machine, and walking.

Swimming and rowing because I prefer whole-body work over targeting pieces-parts. Walking simply because it's relaxing and I can catch up on audio books.

I love calisthenics, strength training, and sprints. I also love playing with my dog. My favorite sports to play recreationally would be softball and racquetball.

I exercise for a variety of reasons, but stress reduction is the thing that gets me out there when nothing else will.

Female, and the only thing I really consider fun is hiking. :) Running/jogging is by far my least favorite thing to do. I did just try out Crossfit for the first time last week and it was ok though! Maybe the camaraderie-ness of it made it less detestable?

So far the only sport that's not too boring or unpleasant for me is cycling, and only because there's a point. I can ride five miles to work every morning and really enjoy it, and I'll spend hours riding somewhere on my bicycle that would take me 20 minutes to get to by car. Running is boring, hiking is too slow, and besides, more than a mile or so on my feet and they start to hurt.

I'm not sure it's paleo (and riding around near cars and their fumes certainly isn't), but it's exercise.

  1. Morning commute - a 3-mile walk from home to office, and often also another mile-plus on the way home. In addition to the calorie burn, it's also a daily dose of sunlight, which helps immensely to offset depression.

  2. Vinyasa yoga - 2 to 3 times per week. I prefer a more challenging routine than the one I've been taking, but the class has a nice vibe.

I practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and muay Thai (yeah, you can call that MMA), and I love hiking and rock/tree/random boulder/steep hill climbing. I connect all of these with a paleo life. Hiking and climbing are likely pretty easy to figure out: being part of nature and the Earth and using by body in MovNat-ish ways. Climbing a short cliff and sprinting along a rocky trail are like puzzles; they require quick feet and a quick mind. As for the martial arts, I enjoy fighting, but not because I can potentially hurt people. I like how it bonds people and teammates, and I feel more natural moving on the mats or in a ring than while walking through a mall or sitting in a chair in class.

(Edit: This is how I like to exercise! http://movnat.com/media/video/ )

Female.

I like:
- Swimming in the ocean like a goofy dog (not lake or swimming pool, too boring) .
- Alternating walking/sprinting/running/jumping as in, running in the woods as if you were trying to catch someone, climbing and jumping over things as necessary.
- I also love heights, so I like climbing anything and everything.

I don't "exercise", exercise is stupid. I "do things".
This is one of the reasons I would love to have my own family farm someday, and do all sorts of things to feed/clothe/etc my family... "exercise" will be every day, all day long, but it won't be a conscious effort to exercise :-)

Ice hockey for all of the above reasons. Stress, sprinting, strength, socializing. I don't relate it to Paleo because I play for me. Best sport ever.
