I kept reading how great coconut butter is, so I ordered a jar of Wilderness Family Naturals. It's definitely tasty, but I find the texture to be really gritty. Maybe coconut butter just isn't for me, but I'm considering trying Artisana; before making the investment, I'm wondering if anyone has tried both and prefers one over the other?

There is one more brand that does Coconut Butter and that's Nutiva. The stuff is called Coconut Manna... Just my 2 cents :) P.S.: Coconut butter from artisana is bloody awesome! – Flavio M. Feb 28 2011 at 17:14

Tried the Artisana, and can't say it's much different from the other types we tried. Maybe a little less gritty than the WFN, and maybe a tad more so than Spectrum. – WyldKard Mar 1 2011 at 14:53

In my opinion, Nutiva's Coconut manna is MUCH grittier and drier than Artisana's Coconut Butter. The minute you put a spoonful of Coconut Manna in your mouth, it absorbs every drop of moisture available and becomes sticky, gritty, and difficult to swallow. Artisana is really good when just slightly warmed. I have a jar of each right now and I definitely gravitate toward the Artisana butter. – lunabelle Jul 31 2011 at 8:53

I use the Artisana, yum, and noticed if I truly get it to a nice gooey state, pop the jar into some simmering water, I don't get the grit/dry mouth. When I leave out and it goes to a room temp melted state that's when it's still kinda gritty. As the melting point is 85 degrees leaving it on the counter works as a temperature gauge as well - if it's ready to be eaten, then it's AC time :) – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Jul 31 2011 at 14:52

Jules I have some individual packets of the Artisana I can bring to AHS for you if you like. I don't really care for any of the coconut butter/cream products I've tried (and I think I've tried them all now) due to the dryness but I keep it around to use in some recipes and the packets to have for emergencies. – Shari Bambino Jul 31 2011 at 16:20

I find all these brands to be similar, and the grit factor seems to decrease with temperature. In my experience, any brand of coconut butter is smoother and more scoopable during warmer months.

Also possibly of interest, The Clothes Make The Girl posted her recipe for coconut butter here: http://theclothesmakethegirl.blogspot.com/2011/02/homemade-coconut-butter-f-yeah.html - it is definitely cheaper, and you can probably alter the ratio of coconut oil to coconut for a smoother consistency.

I was really skeptical when I read that post, and another one like it somewhere else, but I tried it anyway and it works - with great results! Use a load of dried coconut because it really condenses down. I added 1+ Tbsp melted coconut oil to mine. Just be patient, stop every once in a while to scrape down the sides and bottom of your food processor, and let the machine keep on running... and running... and running...... I will never pay $12 a jar for Artisana again. – DAC Mar 1 2011 at 14:54

I actually like the brand by Nutiva. I find it very smooth and creamy and delicious.

It's also much more cheaper than Artisana, I think (definite motivating factor for me when making a purchase). That said, I haven't tried either of the brands you've mentioned, and my only other experience eating coconut butter is making my own, which IS gritty, so anything would seem smooth and creamy and delicious in comparison. :)

Cool thanks! I've seen this one at my local healthfood store; will give it a try. The one I have is good in smoothies & my homemade ice cream, but I'm hoping to find something I can just eat straight for snack emergencies at work. – Jules K Feb 28 2011 at 17:39

that's interesting. the one from tropical traditions is also thick and gritty. 'cream' doesn't really describe it well. it's much more like a coconut butter, but eating a spoonful of it on it's own is actually tougher than getting down a spoonful of nut butter. i think i'll try the other brands as well. – Jack Kronk Feb 28 2011 at 17:53

No problem! :) I find it to be smooth and creamy enough that once I get it warmed up a bit, it drizzles very nicely on chocolate (seriously, this stuff with a bit of Baker's unsweetened tastes absurdly heavenly) and makes a downright decadent treat. I also like to chip at it with a knife as it cools, so that I can pick out solid chunks of delicious coconut awesomeness from the jar whenever the mood strikes me. I hope you're both able to find what you're looking for! :) – Kaz Feb 28 2011 at 23:24

I just tried Nutiva's Coconut Manna - really tasty stuff.. but I haven't tried any other brand yet, so I can't compare.. – The Primalist Apr 20 2011 at 2:03

I've tried both, and prefer Artisana by far. Coconut Manna was much grittier for me. The price was about the same for me too...

I've also tried making my own but mine never 'butter'ified, so it was quite gritty...
