I have been for 2 weeks and my teeth have gotten yellow plus it seems to make my breath smell. Its just normal Tom's of Maine toothpaste. Has anyone got any advice?

I've been brushing my teeth with no toothpaste at all for almost a year and I haven't had any problems. Part of the problem with any kind of toothpaste is that it is abrasive. It will scratch the surface of your teeth and make them duller and prone to yellowing. That's why all toothpastes have things like glycerin in them. There's no need to use toothpaste at all. Just make sure to floss or use a pick to get in between and brush and rinse thoroughly and drink water with your meals, especially if you are eating a very acidic meal with tomatoes, fruits, etc. |

One way fluoride is useful is it helps strengthens enamel by binding to enamel and forming fluorohydroxyapatite. This makes enamel less susceptible to dissolution by acids like those produced by certain bacteria. If your diet does not consist of sugars (which is the food source of bacteria), then the likelihood of getting a cavity is less even in the absence of fluoride toothpaste. Plaque is the sticky, fuzzy stuff that not only feels gross but harbors cavity-causing bacteria. If your oral hygiene is meticulous, i.e. brushing, flossing, remove all plaque you can reach then you'll be safe. Break down the bacteria's home + flush out the bacteria = no acid = no cavity. If you're eating carbs, sugars, drinking sodas (low pH), then the odds of getting a cavity goes up. Throw in less-than-ideal oral hygiene and you've got a hotbed for cavities. Fluoride is like armor. If there is no threat, armor is not necessary. Nonetheless, I will continue using my fluoride toothpaste solely because there's no harm in it's use and there's so many benefits. For the last few weeks, I have been using a mixture of Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and Baking Soda. It leaves my mouth feeling much better for much longer; and, I no longer wake up in the morning with my teeth felling grungy and covered with stuff. Stains have never been a problem for me; but, I would suggest that everybody try just Coconut Oil and Baking Soda. I made a paste in a small bowl and put it in the bathroom, and scoop out some with the tooth brush. Sometimes I swish a teaspoon of Coconut Oil around in my mouth (and spit it out). My mouth ALWAYS feels good when I do this. I have tried Tom's non-fluoride; and was unimpressed. But I really like Coconut Oil and Baking Soda - give it a try. |

The presence or lack of fluoride shouldn't have anything to do with your teeth yellowing, and definitely has nothing to do with breath. In fact, when I switched to fluoride and SLS free toothpaste, my teeth got whiter! The Tropical Traditions tooth cleaner was ok, but so far the Kiss My Face has been my favorite. Way too sweet at first, and I'm not too keen on the glycerin, but I got used to the flavor and it's doing a great job. When I run out, I intend to try the home made coconut oil recipe that Tactical Savage mentioned (minus baking soda except when needed). |

I like the taste of the Tom's of Maine quite a lot, but I've found it to be worse than not even using the stuff when it comes getting my teeth clean. It felt like something in it was preventing my brush from making good contact with my teeth, and I felt like my morning breath was worse for some reason. I've had that experience with other brands of "natural" toothpaste too. I think they might be thickened too much or something, and I feel like I have to rebrush with just water afterwards to get clean teeth. Hands down, the cleanest my teeth have ever been was when I started using a tiny tiny drop of Dr. Bronner's Baby Soap and just brushed with that. It certainly doesn't have that candy cane taste most of us have grown accustomed to over the years, but damn, shiny, shiny smooth teeth are worth tasting a titch of soap in my book. |

I use Tom's and have had no problem. I would have switched to powder ages ago but my daughter thinks it's yucky. She's six. I don't think it's worth the fight. I doubt the presence or absence of fluoride has changed how your teeth respond to being brushed. Have you had any obvious dietary changes during this time as well? |

I have not used toothpaste, or anything else, for a few years now. Since I have given up grains, I find that I don't wake up with that yucky morning mouth anymore. But the staining issue is starting to bug me - I drink a lot of coffee - so I am taking my brother's advice and starting to use Harry's Tooth Powder. After using it for a few months, he just got a gleaming report from his dental hygienist. I ordered mine this weekend, looking forward to trying it out. |

I've been using Vicco Vajradanti Powder for the past couple of months now. It's an Ayurvedic powder mix that includes over 20 something herbs and barks; clove, neem, etc. I brush with just water and floss first to get food particles out and then massage a pinch of that powder into my teeth and gums. One thing I've noticed is that I never get that 'hair on the teeth' feeling that you get if you don't brush for a few days. My breath ALWAYS smells great and my gums are much healthier and stronger, they don't bleed like they used to. I highly recommend it. |

I have also read similar things such as brushing is not necessary and does in fact have downsides...damage to gums and enamel. I am starting to believe all toothpaste should be eliminated. We now use organic non sls non floride brands. I sometimes do oil pulling with cocount oil and THIS I MUST SAY I NOTICE. It is not fun, but I can feel that yucky onion like taste in my mouth when I do this and perhaps due to peri-menopause I've been having breath problems....This eliminates that problem. I read up on oil pulling and it is very interesting. Many people claim whiter teeth, fresher breath, fewwer migrains etc. I am not so faithful with it but can say it helps breath and my teeth do appear to be whiter but not by much. |

No harm in floride? How about the effect it has on the thyroid? I had to quit using any floride based products because of this and I am not comfortable putting something in my mouth that is too toxic to be put in landfills. That's right, there's not a landfill in the world that is cleared to dump floride. BTW...my dental check-ups have been better since I have done this...i.e..not one newly formed cavity and my gums are very sound. |

I've been using one for a couple of years called Nature's Gate with no problems at all. Do you use anything like coffee, tea, cigarettes, etc. that could be staining your teeth? If you used to use a whitening toothpaste and now you've stopped that could be the problem. |

VICCO POWDER ALL THE WAY! I started off using clove powder, a little dipped onto a moist toothbrush, bit weird to start with but i looked forward to brushing my teeth coz it was something new, couldnt believe how clean and shiny they stayed, no plaque growth, bad breath or furry tongue! It makes sence not using all these pastes and rinses that kill germs... Theyre killing all the good flora too! Try clove powder if u cant find vicco powder, both under three bucks, last me over a year for sure! And both have so many other benefits for the teeth, gums and mouth. Oil pulling is also something ive just heard of, done it once with sesame oil, definatly using both methods and looking forward to healthier teeth and gums. |

I tried Tom's of Maine briefly, but my teeth felt weaker and more sensitive pretty quickly so I quit it. I used regular fluoride toothpaste for a while, but recently found Dr. Collins toothpaste with NovaMin, which can actually remineralize some damage and reduce sensitivity. "MI Paste" can also do this via a similar but not identical compound (Recaldent). I can personally vouch that MI Paste (possibly in conjunction with Vitamin K2) has caused one sensitive spot to no longer hurt. I'll add that I don't think the fluoride in toothpaste is much of a concern for most people as long as they rinse well, and am mainly looking for whatever is most effective in protecting my teeth. |

I've been using SLS free toothpaste for quite a few years now and rarely I forget to buy SLS free toothpaste and 3 days later bam!!!! Canker sores. With Clean and Gentle SLS free toothpaste you don't have to be anxious about harsh chemicals eating away your caring mucous lining inside your lips or near the gums.Also Toms is so gentle you don't feel like your eating away the enamel on your teeth like other toothpastes that have course abrasives. |
