Ok, this is one primarily for the girls here, not that I mean to discriminate. ;)

I've adapted pretty well to the paleo lifestyle over the past couple of months and have incorporated a no 'poo/soap shower routine that is finally showing great results. My skin is smoother, clearer and just feels good generally.

It's the part after the shower I'm beginning to wonder about. I cannot, or rather really don't want to give up on cosmetics entirely. I like my mascara and foundation etc, and although not used daily, would like to at least find some alternatives. I'm hoping to give up on foundation eventually, but for now it's doing an awesome job of covering up the acne scars caues by my former SAD lifestyle.

So my question is: what are some 'better' (because I'm sure I can't justify any make-up as 'paleo'!), eco and skin-friendly cosmetic brands that you know of and can recommend?

I've been using several different types of mineral cosmetics for years. There are many small mineral cosmetics companies out there now, so you have to experiment a little to see what works for you. Most will send samples. I like J Lynne cosmetics because they are gluten-free. http://www.jlynnecosmetics.com/ I also use Larenim mascara, and previously used Jane Iredale products which are nice, but they are a little too expensive for me now, and not 100% natural. If you want very basic minerals, Canary Cosmetics are also an option. Bare-Faced Minerals are pretty good.

I stopped using Bare Escentuals, as their mineral veil has parabens in it (a questionable preservative) When I mentioned the parabens in a product review on QVC, and asked them why parabens are in a "natural" product, QVC told me that they would not allow me to post that review on their website. I think that Bare Minerals are over-hyped and really no better than some of the lower-priced minerals, and in some cases, not as good. JMO. They might work just fine for some folks.

Ooh, quite a selection to look at there! I've had a peek at Bare-Faced Minerals before, but it's great to have more options to compare with. Thanks! – Ri Mar 24 2010 at 12:59

Coconut oil is quite clogging and it can also causes rashes, so I wouldn't use it on the face. I have been using jojoba oil as a make up remover and it works very well. Same deal: use your fingers and wipe out with water and/or a soft towel. As a moiturizer, I use argan oil which works fine and helped me go through the end of the winter without a terribly dry, flaky forehead. Mascara: 100% pure - not perfect but it still works well and it's all natural ingredients so I am keeping it. Any good tips for eyeshadows?

A good to evaluate the safety of cosmetics products is to go there: www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ Surprisingly, a lot of "natural brands" such as Dr. Hauschka and Weleda do NOT have good ratings. Once again, the trick is to read, understand the labels and getting informed about the toxicity/safety of the ingredients used in cosmetic products.

Removed the downvote, as coconut oil can clog the skin. – sarah-ann Jan 2 2011 at 16:24

I've been using coconut oil on my face as a moisturizer for several months now, and haven't noticed any clogging. It probably varies from person to person, so it may be worth to try it out yourself, keeping in mind that some people's skin doesn't seem to like it.. – The Primalist Feb 26 2011 at 17:34

Just wanted to add that coconut oil is the best makeup remover, especially for eyes. It removes/cleans everything and leaves your skin super soft. Doesn't sting the eyes either. I just use my fingers to spread it around (it melts quickly onto your skin) then a cloth to wipe makeup off.

Awesome! I used to use Vit E oil as a makeup remover until they started putting soybean oil in there. So now I use kukui nut oil. Works like a charm! :) – gilliebean Mar 24 2010 at 17:01
Fantastic, you answered a question I forgot to ask! Thanks! – Ri Mar 25 2010 at 10:31

I like Gabriel Cosmetics. You can buy them at most Whole Foods. I haven't tried their foundation. I use their lipstick. It's gluten-free! Also, instead of a liquid foundation, I like to use kukui nut oil and a powder foundation. I think the nutritious oil protects my skin from the powder's ingredients. And I use plain witch-hazel as an exfoliant.

The most important thing I do is this: I practice inconsistency. I'm serious. I sometimes wash my face. I sometimes use makeup. I sometimes use oil. I sometimes use witch-hazel. I think it's helpful to not overwork the skin.

What a wonderful expression! To 'practice inconsistency', love it! At last a better way of explaining my random 'bouts of, well...everything. I definitely agree with your point about not overworking the skin. Very sound advice. Thanks! – Ri Mar 24 2010 at 12:58
I think this is good thing to consider, but hydrate often! Just splash water on your face and lightly pat dry as often as possible. I have oily skin so I never use oils, but water several times a day. I think it's important to strike a balance between not overworking as gilliebean said, but also loosening dead skin cells which can clog pores, removing the crap that's in the air and the salts and oils we excrete, and hydration. Plain water is very useful in that respect, and the gentle abrasion of the towel can clear the pores. – Rock_Paper_Shirley Jan 4 2011 at 5:54

I use this brand: Miessence they have a gorgeous smelling and feeling cosmetics and they are organic and completely mineral based. I use one product which is the concealer around my eyes in two shades, dark for summer light for winter and a mix of the two in between seasons, I used to put it on every blemish as a kind of quasi-foundation but now only use it somedays under my eyes if I need to dress up a little. They have lightweight foundations and powders too that smell heavenly.

They also have mascara which I sometimes use in the evening. I just looked at the ingredient list and cannot find one synthetic ingredient in it. It smells good too and really works.

I have found the paleo diet has freshened my skin up so well. I went from a chronically acned teenager to a 40 year old with blemish-free skin. I do not need to use foundation now, but I hardly ever wash my face or use moisturizer nowadays (only a little coconut oil in the winter and for the sun in the summer), so I think the oil balance in my skin is pretty well adjusted.

I had great fun at one time making my own cosmetics, it was great to see exactly what went into such things as lipstick and how I could make it with two or three ingredients rather than the thousands that go into commercial lipstick nowadays. This site has some nice raw ingredients or you can go to a wholesaler and get the ingredients in bulk - making your own stuff is great because you can make it completely fragrance-free or add such things as chamomile flowers or lavender etc. and it is cheaper.

From diycosmetics.com, here is a page on making your own mineral foundation and concealers, all the raw ingredients can be bought on their site.

Thanks! Will definitely have a look into it. There's a bit of some weird vanity in me that still begs for that lovely (mm, often deliciously synthetic!) smell some cosmetic products have. Glad there's an option that may not require compromise in that area. I've thought about making my own before, but that comes under my 'big and scary' headings still due to some recipes requiring a zillion ingredients, but these links look great. Thanks again! – Ri Mar 24 2010 at 13:08
the concealer and powder smells of rose absolut, it is the most divine scent. – Louisa Mar 25 2010 at 11:06

I use Physicians Formula Organic Line for mascara and bronzer because they sell it at the local drug store, don't really wear much else. That line is paraben free. Some gals on the OEvolve list complained it contains soy, but I'm not really worried about teeny tiny amounts of it on my skin, esp since I don't wear this stuff every day. Industrial uses are just about the only thing soy is good for...I have some nice soy candles too.

I don't wear makeup often, but when I do, I like to use mineral makeup. To get it off, I use Cetaphil...its not paleo, but it does a good job and it doesnt dry my face out. Oh, and if you can find it, real, live, traditional kohl powder...the kind you put on with a little glass stick...is amazing. Kohl isn't pigment like eyeshadow...if I understand it correctly, its actually a special kind of soot, and of very ancient origins. It's hard to get off, though, so I use coconut oil or jojoba oil to get it off.

MakeupAlley has a great green living board and cosmetics are often discussed. You can search the board for mascara or whatever you are looking for and then check to see if there are any reviews of the product you are interested in in the Product Review section. I live by that board!

I've been using bareMinerals for about 6 months now. I love the makeup. Probably the closest to "paleo" makeup you'll find. I actually feel like my skin cleared up after about 2 weeks - I only use the foundation (with SPF) and the blush, but they do make mascara too.

There are also other companies out there that make mineral foundations and blushes.

I use them too... love their stuff, and it lasts ages. – waywardsister Jul 4 2010 at 17:49

I alternate between BareMinerals and Dr. Hauschka products, though I'm still looking for an eyeliner I like to replace the Revlon (I like the smudgy tip to blend the line).

It's all down to ingredients, and I like the ingredients in these two lines.

I wash my face and remove makeup with Spectro Jel facial wash, I know it's not natural but at least it contains no parabens. I use Avalon Organics facial toners, moisturizers and serums, also like Green Beaver green tea facial moisturizer. I use Physicians Formula Organicwear foundation, powder, blush and bronzer which I really like, but the mascara lacks ooumph, so I still use CG Lash blast and Loreal eyeliner.

I use jojoba or coconut oil for removing make up, and Orglamix mineral pigments for eyeshadow and liner, and Twink beauty lash paint for mascara. I love it--they have so many different colors!

Have you tried using mineral makeup ? I know, for me, I can't use anything else! My skin is super sensitive and I'm also into using less chemicals on my body (inside and out) so I just switched to mineral makeup. I especially like my mineral foundation, my skin looks so much more natural and glowing than with normal foundation..
