I'd like to create some kind of online resource for paleo restaurants, markets, etc. in the Washington DC area (and perhaps arranging for local paleo dieters to get together for workouts, a summer cook-out, etc). I don't think it's "big" enough be a whole website, and frankly I don't want to devote that kind of time to it. But I wouldn't want to intrude on Patrik's wonderful site here with something of limited interest to the larger community.

Any suggestions?

I suggest that you create a Meetup group for the Washington DC area just like this one in New York! Perhaps Melissa can give you some pointers?

Hi Glenn. There's a "meet & greet" section in the Sisson MDA forums. There have been local barbecues, pot lucks, etc. organized there. You can either search for an existing DC group, or organize your own. You can exchange ideas for shopping, dining, gyms, etc. Of course, it's Mark's site, and the format may be limiting-- http://www.marksdailyapple.com/forum/forum/meet-and-greet

Thanks Ed! I will check that out! – Glenn Mar 24 2010 at 0:00

You could also set up a ning site (http://www.ning.com/). It is a nice way for like minded people to share information through a social network. You can even name is something catchy and have full control over it! As long as you limited it sufficiently geographically it would not become cumbersome.

Great. Thanks! – Glenn Mar 24 2010 at 0:01

Yeah, actually John Durant and I are working on this. I have so many projects that it is on the backburner, but basically it will be a site with maps, a directory, and other cool resources. Meetup has worked for us so far, but there are some serious limitations to both that and Ning.

Thanks for the reply. Good luck with this project! – Glenn Mar 24 2010 at 0:00
Have you looked at other (installable) social networking systems? What do you find limiting about Meetup? – HealthRediscovery Mar 24 2010 at 4:05

i actually got the paleodc url a few months ago in my zeal for eating this way. my aim is of course to get a local group going. the meetup seemed more expensive than just setting up a email list and a five url tho. not much is going on with the site as i havent promoted it or really blogged much to get attention. having a group to meet up with and a team of writers for the website would make it pretty awesome! we should team up, Glenn!

Cool! What part of town? (I'm NW, by Van Ness Metro. Train at Van Ness Golds.) – Glenn Mar 24 2010 at 14:12
i'm in the U street area near Results. Perhaps we can use the group to lobby local gyms to buy more squat racks. – MikeD Mar 25 2010 at 15:11
