I started a 30 day Paleo challenge on Oct 16th. Ive been pretty strict with my diet with the exception of some heavy whipping cream in my coffee. I typically loose weight in my stomach first, but over the past two weeks, I feel thicker in my mid-section, with chronic bloating. Has anyone else experienced this? And is there something I could be doing wrong?
You 'feel' thicker or you have gotten on the scale or measured and really are thicker? Often when eating paleo foods, they fill you up faster. It's easier to feel stuffed because satiation kicks in and makes you feel stuffed. Whereas with grains, for whatever reason, I found I could eat tons and tons before I ever felt full, and the the feeling of fullness would be gone quickly and I had cravings to eat even more soon after! Now on paleo, I probably feel way stuffed and full much more than at any other time in my life. Yet the scale and the fit of my clothes verify that I am actually losing weight, not gaining. It's actually rather weird and took me some time to get my head around. I'd be thinking that oh man, I ate too much, but then I'd get on the scale and I lost another pound! My mother experienced the same. She still has trouble believing she is losing weight while eating all kinds of 'fattening' yummy foods until stuffed every day, hehe.
Now not to say that I know for sure that everyone will experience the same, but I can't say much unless you have actually taken measurements and verified your actual stomach girth. PLUS we would need to have a better understanding of what you are eating. Maybe 3 day food plan would help. I guess you could manage to gain if you ate enough nut butter and cheese every day.
I'd drop the nuts and fruits for a few weeks and see how you feel without them.
Some people react poorly to both.
Nuts(other than macadamia) tend to be high in omega 6 as well as other gut irritants. Some of the processing methods leave them unfriendly as well.
Dried Fruits are sugar bombs, I actually like cranberries, however all the dried varieties are covered in sugar. Dried pineapple tends to be completely soaked in sugar in addition to already bin high fructose bombs by themselves .
If you find removal from your diet for 2-3 week don't solicit a change, slowly reintroduce them back in separately.
Rest and recovery is important even outside of paleo. Check your sleep... And tone back the crossfit to a 2 on 1 off if you can.
For cutting visceral fat, that nasty ugly stomach weight, I'd go very low carbs on the offday, then have your yams/tubers post workout day 2.
Day 1. Rest- low carb
Day 2. Exercise - moderate to high carb refeed
Day 3. Exercise - low carb
Yes, I have had a number of people mention this to me when I refer them to a paleo diet. What I have found is that because they are introducing a large amount of fiber into their diet that they feel that for two weeks or so until their body gets used to the fiber. I had that issue a first but it only lasted a few days. Make sure you are also drinking a good amount of water.
Just curious if you are still suffering from weight gain and increased body fat. I too am a petite female who before paleo was much leaner and did equal to more exercise in my pre paleo days. I was about 118 5"3 and 20 bf pre paleo, not I am 128, 25 bf on paleo. Its very confusing and frustrating.
I experienced a lot of bloating when I was eating too much protein. What "too much" is will vary from person to person, but I saw complete improvement of my chronic bloat when I went from ~1 lb meat/day to ~1/2 lb meat/day. If you're still around it might be something to consider.
Well its not letting me add a comment, but this was it: I'm not putting too much importance on weight right now; I've been going to cross fit 5-6 times a week, so I'm not sure how to account for possible muscle gain. I'm gauging it by the way my pants fit, and its not looking good (literally). I haven't been super hungry, cause my meals are keeping me full longer. I'm not having any dairy except a small amount of butter, and some heavy whipping cream in my coffee. And average 3 day diet would involve: 1 egg, with 1 slice of bacon, and some salsa for breakfasts. Lunches and dinners typically are either chicken, fish, or sausage, and a combo of kale, spinach, asparagus, broccoli, and yams. However I recently cut back on my yam intake to about twice a week, and post workout. If I snack on anything, its a handful of almonds, macadamias, cashews, and dried cranberry's and pineapple. And an occasional square of sugar free chocolate.
Well thank you all for your responses. I will give all of it a try. And I did weigh myself and measure myself, and I am heavier and thicker. I'm gonna give it another couple of weeks with those modifications. I appreciate the input.
Any updates Sumo and Margaret? Did you figure out the issue? I can really overdo the yams, they can be so super-palatable. I sometimes I go overboard with coconut milk. Did you have to start counting calories?
