I find the $10 per pound macadamia prices too steep, so I figure maybe they would be cheaper if I purchased them unshelled. Any ideas on where one could do this?

Trust me mate, if you get them unshelled, you are gonna have A LOT of work to do. It's no joke. I harvested about 6 pounds of mac nuts (after shelling) from a tree in my backyard last fall. The shells are ROCK hard, and will require the strongest nut crackers you've got or a sledge hammer and a cement floor (I'm serious). Also, there are contraptions you can buy online to shell them individually if you are willing to buy such a thing. Here's the real deal though... once you shell them, they are still not ready to eat. They are soft and gummy. You have to dehyrdrate them at low temp for at least 24 hours, maybe more. You can use your toaster oven at about 110 degrees. My advice... unless you desire a project, buy them raw and ready to eat. |

$10/lb seems to be about average, but you may find some better sources via this link: http://paleohacks.com/questions/12674/datapoints-how-much-per-lb-do-you-pay-for-maca damia-nuts/12696#12696 I think the majority of the suggestions here are for unshelled macadamias. Good luck! |

bit of maths here. They are 18€ a kilo here. I think that works out at 11,44$ a pound. More expensive here. |

I buy mine from Trader Joes and they are about 5 bucks for a pound unsalted. |

Some online retailers sell 'broken nuts' - pieces which break while shelling. These are generally much cheaper. If you dont care about how they are presented, you could try these. |
