I heard somewhere that msg-intolerant people sometimes get reactions from the stuff that supplement capsules are made of. Any thoughts on whether there is anything un-Paleo in vitamin gel caps?

Yes gelatin is processed and contains "free glutamic acid". Bad stuff, take the supplement powder out of the gelcap to avoid this problem. – justanotherhunt Mar 5 2011 at 5:17

vitamin gel caps are made of animal gelatin. therefor paleo, also, vegetarian ones are made of cellulose, therefor paleo.

Processed gelatin found in pills isn't anything like gelatin that people would be consuming normally from cooked animals. The processed kind is exposed to unnatural levels of heat and consequently contains tons of "free glutamic acid". Totally neurotoxic like MSG, it's the same thing. It's best to take the powder out of the gel cap and take it with water, may taste crappy but at least we're avoiding the excitotoxin. – justanotherhunt Mar 5 2011 at 5:16

Pills are not paleo. Paleo is getting your nutrition from real food, not processed pills. However, I think in some cases with currently available food supply itself not being totally paleo, carefully targeted supplementation of some nutrients may be more healthy than not. The true paleo is long gone, we are just trying to make a healthful replicant of some of the more important and healthful parts of it..

I believe some "natural" vitamins that are made from the actual source and not artificial are okay but should only be supplemented if someone has a deficiency or can't get it from a source. The binders or capsule itself is usually the only toxic part of the pill. For instance gelatin, one of the more popular ingredients for capsules, can contain tons of unnatural free glutamic acid(unlike unprocessed gelatin) and so should be avoided. Vegetable celluose is a better type of "capsule" but IMO it's best to just put the powder itself in in water and drink instead of ingesting the capsule. – justanotherhunt Mar 5 2011 at 9:58
