I am currently feeling a big cold coming on (headache, chest hurts etc) and I've been upping Vit C, D, taking oil of oregano and the symptoms are subsiding - BUT - I am getting a really sore throat. I have been gargling with salt, but it's not helping much.

Does anyone have any pale-friendly sore throat remedies (that work)

Thanks!!

Works for me all the time: warm water and about a teaspoon of cayenne pepper -- gargle with it every 15 minutes or so for a couple hours. It almost always clears my sore throat up before the two hours is up.

I'm going to try this when i get home - I'm a little scared I'm not going to lie. I think the cayenne pepper is just going to scare the sore right out of my throat ;) – Thumper Mar 5 2011 at 0:25
It's not bad at all. Let it rest on your throat for like 10 seconds, then spit. I work in radio -- my voice is important so when the throat hurts, it affects my work. This always works for me. – Jason Mar 5 2011 at 4:56

I have read that some take 50,000IU of Vitamin D3 at the onset of symptoms for a week or so and that seems to nip the problem. Then they cut back to their regular 5000IU a day. Vit D3 is known to increase the immune system and wards off colds and flus.

I have been supplementing with 5000IU for three years and have been cold and flue free for that period. I would usually get a couple of bouts of the flu prior to switching to paleo and sup with D3.

Drink apple cider vinegar with warm water before bed, like Bragg Organic. It works for me.

Sage tea- you can add peppermint and any other herbs that are good for a sore throat. It only works until you eat or drink something else, though.

Warmed orange juice with honey (it's surprisingly good)

Hot water with lemon juice and whiskey (or a more paleo-ish liquor, I use Glenfiddich)

Black tea with lemon

Bone broth

All of the above work best when warm or hot. I liked the hot water with lemon and whiskey so much that I kept drinking it even after I got over my cold.

Chew on some Osha Root, also called Snake Root. Used by my people for centuries, it is excellent for throat ailments.
