Woah, slow down with the 'beauty obsessed ladies' bit - what about the beauty/power/body-perfect obsessed guys? How come its the girls who get this label?
I am not a geek. I can use a computer, I understand something of the biology of the body, only because it seems that to dip into this particular paleo world, one needs to learn some scientific words.
I am a mother and a wife and am 'concerned' with my own body, I am not beauty-obsessed (unless you mean the kind of beauty which comes from the inside of which I am VERY interested in). I want to give my children the best chance I can give them in terms of nutrition and paleo living. I am a traditionalist, providing solid healthy meals for myself and my family based on paleo concepts, with the compromises that come with anything to do with raising children in the modern world......
You may find that there are many people here who are just regular people, although it seems that the geeks have the loudest voice in the paleo world, as they are able to back up what they write about with facts and studies, but this is only the result of society trusting our science-based world which 'dominates' the voices and 'senses' and 'knowing' of others (usually women), who are often pushed into the background (though thankfully not here) - yet that does not make these latter experiences any less valid than the scientific ones. After all, paleo was only able to exist in the past through trial and error and word of mouth from one generation to the next through direct teaching and stories.
So indeed, your 'revenge of the geek' as you already know, would not happen at all TODAY without those tens of thousands of years of personal, primitive (and non-scientific) experience coming before them......with science and fitness apart, the ultimate question will always be, "Was it done like that in Paleolithic times?" - Kind of like a chicken and egg scenario......
And there are still a huge number of these regular people around, who know what they know because it works, they see it work with their children and partners and they know, without necessary the backup of science to 'validate' their experiences. The are not jocks, they are not geeks, they have just found their way because they have had to find their way, they knew that they could not stop until they had found their way, nothing to do with body-perfection or scientific study, although that does come into it as par for the course, as a natural result of healthy inquisitiveness.....but probably more to do with trying to reverse the pain, dull ache or allergy, lift the extra pounds or halt the sense of not-well-being that propels many people into starting the 'search'.......
For me, paleo started with this sense that things were not quite right and found its resting place as the life I lead 'close to the earth', it just so happens to have included the subjects of nutrition science and fitness, although I find I cannot compartmentalize my paleo life quite as easily as all that.
The geeks and sports fanatics may seem the most obvious voices here, and it certainly is very satisfying to read a report that backs up the hunches us regular people have had all along, but I do not think it has much to do with REVENGE of the geeks, I think it is probably more to do with the fact that these giants are standing on the shoulders of other giants.......
