Does anyone take all Wolf's supplements suggestions? If so, would like to hear brands and opinions on each--hope I got them all below:

Magnesium Citrate, Vit D, NAC, R ALA, Fish Oil, Digestive Enz, Probiotic,

One of the things that bugs me about Wolf's supplements is that it spits in the face of "eat real food." While some supplementation (on any diet) could be seen as useful (for things like Vitamin D), the more supplements recommended, the less strong an argument becomes for eating a holistic diet where all one's nutritional needs are accounted for. – WyldKard Mar 7 2011 at 15:19

well he pushes eating real food first and formost but things like Magnesium aren't present where they once were at the levels they once were. Sunlight is only available if your boss lets you go outside. you gotta eat a lot of fish. probiotics are another tricky one if you've suffered from stomach disorders that killed all your gut flora you probably need higher doses than what youd get from food. – MikeD Mar 7 2011 at 15:26

Sunlight isn't always enough for vitamin D anyway. Even people in San Diego, of all places, test with low levels. – Dana Mar 7 2011 at 17:21

Robb spoke about this on his last podcast and mentioned that these were only used to help him back to health. As he mentioned in the blog from all the traveling his adrenals and cortisol were shot. I don't think he would recommend all those for a healthy individual.

I would agree with this. If you read his book, he says he actually hesitated to include anything about supplements because that gives people the mindframe that they don't need to do the right thing nutritionally as long as they supplement. With that said, I do take VitD (the brand changes, I just get tablets instead of capsules) and Carlson's liquid fish oil. – Erin Mar 7 2011 at 16:50

I was at an all day seminar with Matt Lalonde who is a phD Chemist and a nutrition research paleo dude at Harvard and he typically sees eye to eye with Robb on most topics. When it comes to supplementation his only recommendations (all backed by extensive research) is a vitamin D if you live in the northern hemisphere or don't get daily sun exposure, and omega-3 supplementation. He actually suggests using an Alga-DHA since your body can make EPA from DHA fairly inexpensively, and mentioned that most fish oils oxidize easily and is concerned about the sustainability of fish-oil harvesting. I am a big proponent of making sure that if you do get fish oil that you get a quality oil that is cold-pressed and has added antioxidants prior to bottling it since it does rancidify easily. The litmus test is if the oil in the bottle or capsule tastes awful then it's probably rancid (most cheap brands are rancid). In terms of vitamins and minerals, if you have all your ducks in a row with food quality then you should not need any supplementation. Matt drinks electrolyte enhanced water to make sure he gets enough minerals including magnesium. The only other supplement that he considers is probiotics if you have been sick, had antibiotic treatments, and do not eat fermented foods.

So jealous you got to go to an all day seminar with Matt! That must have been awesome! – sherpamelissa Mar 7 2011 at 17:53
Yes, it was bad-ass indeed. Totally free to the public too! Gary Taubes will be at Harvard in 2 weeks for a free seminar as well. – Dr. Ryan Mar 7 2011 at 20:15

I do take most of those- sometimes I pop a Trader Joe's fish oil mostly if I eat out, I usually take NOW vitamin D with breakfast, Blue Bonnett magnesium at night. I only really take enzymes (Source Naturals) when I have gluten, and I used to take probiotics (Dr. Ohira's or Pearls) religiously, but have been having a hard time remembering to take them & I want to start those up again due to some upset stomach issues.
