Check out Chris Masterjohn's latest article.

Nevertheless, I still hold some small place in the back of my brain that has been soaked for so long in the mainstream media's fear-mongering that probably will never go away.

Yes, to some tiny extent, I'm still a bit wary of bacon and eggs.

What?! You all don't read the Bible every day? C'mon folks.

Page 427:

"thou shalt not fear bacon and eggs".

Eggs are a regular staple. We go through about 3 dozen per week for the two of us.

For bacon, 0g of sugar (which probably really means between 0g and 1g somehwere) does not really concern me much. until someone can confirm that the small amount of sugar in bacon that does not even qualify for 1g is somehow a higher worry than simply eating less than 1g in some other food, I will continue to eat uncured bacon with no nitrates and carry on.

And while we are talking about religion and everything, I just want to point out that I'm reasonably certain that God eats bacon in Heaven.

Amen.

If there's no bacon or steak in heaven, then I'm just going to hang out elsewhere in the end. ;-) – Chickenosaurus Rex Mar 10 2011 at 0:15

Thanks for the article link.

I think it's good to be wary of bacon to the extent that it, like all other conventional meats, is generally coming from pigs who have been fed unhealthy diets. Same thing for eggs. But by their nature, I don't think there's anything inherently bad about bacon and eggs.

And in the absence of better stuff, I still eat conventionally-raised bacon (fresh from the butcher) and eggs without too much worry. I wish pastured piggies were available where I live, but that's not going to stop me chowing on some bacon. Can I get an AMEN?

OMG! I finally had some pastured bacon from the Farmer's Market in Alexandria, VA. At $6/lb its only a dollar more than the Oscar Meyer we usually buy. I baked it in the oven (baking is the best!). Most awesomely friggin' delicious bacon EVER!!!! – Dave S. Mar 9 2011 at 19:58
Btw, I used the bacon fat to start a big old pot of chili - yum! – Dave S. Mar 9 2011 at 19:59
I don't think it's such a big deal with pigs whether they are pastured or not (unlike cows), pigs don't eat grass, they eat most things you put infront of them (like goats). Wild boars forage for acorns here in Spain - I eat Jamón Iberico... – oliverh Mar 10 2011 at 19:34

Yes, I do! Because I think the fundamental science, which provides, that eight eggs and tons of bacon for breakfast are healty, is still to weak.

Some people here seem to think, that those studies that detected the FAT LIE, are a legitimate reason to binge on fat excessively.

BUT, who knows what science will bring in the next 10 years? Perhaps completely new biochemical pathway will be discovered, or underlying processes, that show that SatFat/Cholesterol is not that good as formerly (now paleo) thought.

So, I still have my concerns about to much eggs and bacon. For me there seems to be at the moment enough scientific evidence, that SatFat and Cholesterol may be not that bad, possibly very healty. So I eat it in moderation.

You never know what the next "truth" will be, so dont excess, do the moderate path of the middle! So there is not too much to regret in some years;-) Perhaps only 4 eggs a week, half of that bacon, some more veggies etc.

CiaoCiao

good points made here butternut. btw... is that butternut as in "butternut squash" or "i love butter". and if the latter, do you hold any fear of butter? (i had to ask) – Jack Kronk Mar 9 2011 at 22:12
I know what you mean, the 'truth' seems to change constantly. But from an objective standpoint, the evidence against saturated fat is almost non-existent when you factor in other variables. If anything in a load of bacon is likely to be bad, it's the omega 6 and the preserving chemicals (there is quite a consistent association between processed meats and cancer) – sarah-ann Mar 9 2011 at 22:13
butternut from the squash;-) I do butter also in moderation. – Butternut11 Mar 9 2011 at 22:25
I would disagree sarah-ann. Details or other version of "the paleo diet" indeed exist but "eat real food" is still a stellar advice. – Ikco Mar 11 2011 at 10:07

I fear neither. Fear mongering doesn't rule my life.

That's the kind of bold declaration that typically masks some level of discomfort and fear, if you're willing to be honest and look at it head-on. – Bob Carson Mar 9 2011 at 15:15

@Bob Carson: No, it doesn't Bob. You don't know me personally, so your "diagnosis" is wrong. I am being honest. If you can't accept that, then so be it. – Chickenosaurus Rex Mar 10 2011 at 0:00

I don't see anything at all wrong with eggs. They are wonderful, delicious pods of nutrients.

Bacon is also wonderful, but more like a candy to me as there is no satiating switch like I have with eggs. I eat a certain amount of eggs and, even though they're delicious, I'm done. I eat a certain amount of bacon...and I can eat more and more of it. There is no off switch.

Fear of eggs: none

Fear of bacon: some

You know, I experience this exactly! Eggs for me have a definite stopping point. Bacon, I have yet to find one. Kinda scary. – StephNY May 19 2011 at 18:25

for what it's worth I eat between 5-9 eggs each day. I feel great and have perfect cholesterol.

Mine has gone from 160 total cholesterol while eating a vegan diet to 300 total, and from 110 LDL to 215 LDL. I'm just a bit wary. Yeah, yeah, my HDL and triglycerides went dramatically great, but still. – Kirik Jenness Mar 9 2011 at 14:24

Good cite, Jeff, but a lipid kinda guy could come in here and drop dozens, if not hundreds, of cites for studies that fully back up the cholesterol-CAD link. – Bob Carson Mar 9 2011 at 15:10
fair enough, here's another wild research article... nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199103283241306 and a blog I wrote summarizing other people's blogs and research hungryforreal.net/Home_Page.html#Saturated_Fat – Jeff May 7 2011 at 1:45

I eat tons of pastured bacon and free range eggs... Feel great and great cholesterol as well.

I do avoid CAFO eggs. I don't like eating offspring of animals that weren't healthy.

Do you order it, or is it available to you locally? – losterman Mar 9 2011 at 14:26
young people often feel great...whatever they eat. – Butternut11 Mar 9 2011 at 22:29
I pick it up from a local farm I found on Eatwild.com. Im 32 and formerly very overweight, and I assure you there are TONs of foods I dont feel good on. – Stephen-Aegis Mar 10 2011 at 0:27

I go through about a dozen and a half eggs per week. I still look at bacon as "decadent" for some reason.

No worries here. although my wife and i eat bacon, it isn't every day. eggs; on the other hand, are and everyday staple

I haven't been able to get my hands on any pastured bacon, but I eat about a pack a week of something at least nitrate free/low sodium, such as Nature's Promise brand from Giant. I myself eat a little over a dozen eggs a week. My cholesterol and trigs are great; I've oversome my fear of bacon and eggs, but some friends and family still seem a little scared for me ;)

My sister gasps in horror at my Livestrong diary when I enter "eggs fried in bacon grease" on weekend mornings. :P – sherpamelissa Mar 9 2011 at 14:53

I'm with the OP. We can all cite the abstracts and blog articles galore, but it sure seems like not many people are truly 100% confident. Just look around here and other paleo blogs and sites for the thinly veiled consternation that usually gets masked as questions about cholesterol.

To be blunt about it, I'm in no way convinced that anyone really knows much of anything. Maybe that's a good reason to say "heck with it" and not worry in the least. In fact, I'd say for sure it's a good reason. At the same time, I think that everyone who takes pains to throw up articles and cites should also concede their lack of total comfort with having high cholesterol.

Just my opinion. Can't wait to read others'.

who cares about conceding lack of total comfort. are we 100% confident of anything really? there are reasonable questions about eggs, beef, butter, bacon, cream, honey, potatoes, raw milk, chicken, fish oil, etc etc. i can go on and on. people have questions about nearly everything and want to get the straight and skinny on it. someone who takes the time to post an article and ask opinions of other knowledgeable folks is just carrying out proper due diligence in my opinion. – Jack Kronk Mar 9 2011 at 17:39

I eat bacon and eggs for breakfast almost every day. The last time my cholesterol was checked, my HDL was 93, which the nurse described as freakishly high. It's the processed carbs and industrial oils that wreck my blood chemestry.

I'm very new to this, so, yes, when i eat bacon, i feel i'm eating the most sinful and dangerous thing. :( I love it, but i can't shake this feeling.

Heck no, seeing as how I eat and feed my family bacon(or sausage or ham) and eggs everyday Our family of 4.5 (our 18yo only eats at home occasionally these days) goes through 5doz eggs almost weekly.

Sure they're high in saturated fats - but I don't buy into the cholesterol myth or the USDA's dietary guidelines.

Sure they're high in salt - but I don't salt my food otherwise.

Nitrites? Eh breathing kills us a little every day and there are nitrite free options.

Only reason I avoid bacon is because I can NOT find one that does not have sugar in it. But once I find one -- I am buying a truckload!

Same here. It's too difficult to find good quality bacon. – rob Mar 9 2011 at 15:53
Do you have a local butcher? The one here has fresh bacon, no additives aside from salt. – losterman Mar 9 2011 at 18:07

It just doesn't seem like anyone knows enough. Best just to not worry, really. Eat whole foods and live well.
