So sort of following on the heels of the question from yesterday regarding horrible things that you ate once upon a time, I got to thinking about what I eat as a treat now - you know when you want to celebrate, or unwind from a crazy hectic day - or just want to treat yourself.

What is something that you eat as a treat now - or classify as a treat or dessert?

I think a big one for me is pork rinds (I don't make my own, so they are a bit processed - but they are super delicious). And on Sunday morning I add some 'paleo-ish' home-made irish cream to my coffee (coconut milk, whiskey, organic almond extract, organic vanilla and espresso shaken in a bottle and kept in the fridge)

I melt a square of unsweetened baking chocolate, then stir in 2 tsp of blackstrap molasses and some chopped almonds or pecans. Makes too much to eat in one sitting--I usually eat it over 4-5 days but I really like it and it doesn't trigger binge urges. – Nance Aug 3 2011 at 3:59

YEs! bree, its incredible. super easy, too. i double the chile powder because i like a kick, and i have it with cinnamon whipped cream and strawberries. i lost my springform pan (?) so i made this in oversized cupcake tins and they were adorable individual cakes. let me know what you think! simplyrecipes.com/recipes/… – being Mar 10 2011 at 1:09

You know, I was tempted to get a chili Lindt dark chocolate bar at CVS today. Maybe we are food-twins. :) Which brings me to that flourless chocolate cake...might be bookmarking that one for my birthday later this year. :) – familygrokumentarian Mar 10 2011 at 1:56

Mascarpone is cultured creme fraiche - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mascarpone . It is typically very thick, with a texture like soft cream cheese, but a taste that is slightly sweeter, less salty, more mild in general. You can combine it with sweet stuff like berries, or savory stuff like blue-veined cheeses. I had a VLC omeleete this morning with mascarpone and gorgonzola - YUM. – familygrokumentarian Mar 10 2011 at 3:19

  • Two words: Macadamia butter.

  • Of course, there's also cashew macadamia butter if you're willing to do cashews as a cheat. So good you should have to show a driver's license to purchase it.

  • Lindt 85% or higher, or Green & Black's 85% (my preferred) for chocolate.

  • Macadmia oil + balsamic vinegar + cocoa powder, add fresh blueberries, toss to coat, top with walnuts.

  • Bacon in Vosges dark chocolate. No I am NOT kidding. It is superbly, indescribably delicious. My sister-in-law gave me one at Christmastime - I think she bought it at World Market.

Five double processed white flour doughnuts deep fried in soy oil topped with an extra sweet simulated chocolate glaze. All washed down with a liter of coke.

Melt 85% upwards dark chocolate, mix it with crushed nut of choice and a slab of grass fed butter, leave in the fridge to set. Eat. Oh.....my......goodness. You can also mix the melted chocolate with heavy cream for a truffley texture and/or mix in desicated coconut instead of nuts. Seriously seriously good.

Whipped cream and raspberries/strawberries is a relatively low-fructose treat that I'll have here and there.

Mascarpone also goes fantastically with berries. Add cacao nibs for a special Better-Homes-and-Gardens esque touch - great for fancy pants events like baby showers, wedding showers, teas, brunches etc. primalkitchen.blogspot.com/2011/03/… – familygrokumentarian Mar 9 2011 at 23:33

If only I a) could make it to the Ancestral Health Symposium, and b) there were kitchens free to be used. We'd do it up rightly! :-D – familygrokumentarian Mar 10 2011 at 3:16

My normal treat is 2 squares of 80+ dark chocolate. I buy whatever they have at whatever grocery store I'm at. I have had Lindt, Ghiradelli, Green & Black, Godiva. They are all good.

All my Paleo buddies have been doing a Whole 30, so I have not made any Paleo baked goods in awhile. But I do make Pumpkin Almond Butter Bars, Almost Paleo Brownies, Macadamia Nut Cookies, Banana Bread, Almond Muffins... when I have someone to share them with. I have them with my tea after dinner on nights I don't have chocolate.

I don't consider any kind of fruit a "treat". I usually have one serving of fruit a day. Which fruit I choose depends on how many other carbs I have that day. I try to stay under 75 carbs, so if I'm having a sweet potato at dinner, I'll have a lower carb fruit. If I'm having zucchini with dinner, I can have a high carb fruit.

For me, it's a balancing act of staying at the ratios that I have determined are best for me. I think for some that ruins all the "fun", but I love planning everything and coming out with exactly the right combos.

I have to say though, as a recovered vegan/vegetarian, almost everything is a treat! Roast beef and mustard -yummmmm.

I'll have a coconut cream pie Larabar once a week or so, sometimes I'll bake a treat from health-bent.com (pumpkin bars, banana bread). A couple weeks ago I made some macadamias enrobed in dark chocolate- I call em Chocolate Salty Nuts (I used to watch a lot of South Park in my youth).

For me to maintain my 170 lb weight loss I eat meat, eggs,, fats and veggies only in my daily menu. When I need a treat I go to foods that are staples for many but must retain "special" status for me:

  • Homemade chocolate truffles (very dark chocolate, cream, butter, stevia)
  • Cheese Fruit (baked apples, berries and whipped cream usually)
  • Yogurt
  • Cottage cheese
  • Quinoa
  • Spiced or cocoa nuts (homemade)

The 99% is surprisingly good.

And have to say had a big bowl of mashed potatoes with lots of butter last Sunday brunch and it was great. Earned it with 2 huge barbell workouts on Sat and Sun am.

HMMM, I wish there were MORE treats beyond dried fruits. for me: dairy free (coconut milk, cashew or almond nut milk) yogurt made at home with slices of bananas or cherry jam (made by my nieghbor) diary free ice cream (coconut milk) with hot runny chocolate and for salty...a nasty dairy treat grated parmeasean cheese spread very thin over a plate, popped in the mircowave for 4 mintues then broken up or sliced gives you wonderful crispy cheese crackers......... a very fat substitute for potatoe chips, pretzels or whatever. I use a pizza cutter and dip the wedges in whatever is handy.

ooh I also make pizza without the crust. Just throw the tomtatoe sauce, oregano, something spicy, and cheese (any kind) on a plate and place under the broiler or in the microwave and dig in with a fork. Who needs the crust anyway?

The local ice cream shop has grass-fed gelato. All I can say is wow. http://www.thesplitbanana.com/index.html It's in Staunton Virginia, so you can grab a gelato, then drive 15 minutes to Polyface Farms and pick up the rest of your grass-fed food.

This has been high on my list of indulgences lately. Nix the agave nectar, though. And it really doesn't need the whipped cream on top. Very rich.

SO yummy!

EDIT: On a whim, I tried turing this recipe into ice cream today - OMG! I followed the original recipe, except I only used 1/2 c of water, substituted honey for the agave nectar and thew in 3 egg yolks. Then I froze the mixture in an ice cream maker. Wow wow wow!

I wouldn't call them cheats, but treats:

butter, just a spoon, or with the following: dried fruits (dates or sultanas are very yummy), shredded coconut, nuts

dark chocolate (even better with butter, also reduces the amount of chocolate you eat)

bacon and fruits fried in butter or coconut oil

berries and gelatine dessert

Something with grains I would call a cheat. These are treats, because I don't eat them very much. And I don't cheat (at least not that I know of).

Of course, a big grass fed rib-eye steak is also a treat. As is any good meal.

I have some canned sliced peaches with some pieces of 85% dark chocolate and smother it with cream. On other occasions I'll have some brand of yoghurt I can get near here, it's in a small tub (200ml), blueberry flavor, about 14g carbs in it.

85-90% dark chocolate is my primary indulgence, and I suppose heavy cream in my coffee or on berries is, too. Other than that, maybe a spoonful (or two, or three) of honey or almond-banana pancakes.

Sometimes I'll snack on a bowl of nuts(pecans/almonds/walnuts) and frozen berries, typically raspberries because I love them. I might toss in a few dried cranberries from Trader Joes. In fact, all of my snacking is on Trader Joes food, it's either unsweetened dried blueberries, or their Vegetable or Sweet Potato chips. The chips are fairly low sodium, 35mg and 50mg per serving, respectively.

I do LOVE dark chocolate though, I just never go out of my way to buy it. One thing my mother makes is macaroons with pure cocoa, and some other raw ingredients, damn delicious!
