For you hunters out there, what are the differences in mule deer and whitetail deer? I'm aware of the physical items and natural ranges but nothing on the meat. I live in the southern US and we have Whitetails and over in Utah they have the Muleys.

i grew up eating wild game, mostly deer. i've had white tail and mule deer and honestly i couldnt tell a difference taste wise. |

I'm a California hunter. We have both Mule and Blacktail. Mule deer are much bigger and are mostly located in the eastern Sierras. Mule deer in the eastern Sierras range in the high desert and are easier to spot in hunting season. Blacktail range in the mountains and blend in easily to the coniferous forest. Blacktail are sneaky ghosts during hunting season and are very hard to hunt. Both species eat a lot of acorns. Blacktail eat more grasses like clover and alfalfa. To me they both taste the same, basically. That said, Blacktails from the foothills tend to eat more human-supplied food, like rosebushes and other garden plants--they don't taste as good as the Blacktails from high elevation mountain ranges. Personally, I prefer Blacktails from northern California, up near the Oregon border. In late October they have a nice layer of fat! |
