After telling my mom that I frequently eat 5-7 eggs for breakfast, she expressed worry about my cholesterol. I told her I think the conventional wisdom is wrong in this regard, but I realized I don't really know the story on this.
What is the story about consumption of cholesterol? I've heard a lot of talk about it in paleoland but have found it a bit confusing. What's the best concise, clear summary of the best evidence, or could someone offer their own summary of their reading of the evidence?
I know there are a lot of sources out there to read, but I thought I'd groupsource this to get a good answer to give my dear mother. It's also possible that I'm wrong about this and should cut down on eggs, which would make me sad.
The eggs I eat in China are from pastured chickens, as far as I know.
BTW my mom goes to an acupuncturist who is into paleo, so she should be open to all of this.
I got the same response when I told my cousins that I eat 5 eggs for breakfast, and bacon. they told me I am making myself even more fat, and I need to eat less, in which I told them that I have already lost 14 lbs, and they can kiss my ass.
It's difficult to prove a negative, so this makes it difficult to prove that high cholesterol is harmless. There are two ideas here: 1) Eating foods with cholesterol raises serum cholesterol; 2) Elevated serum cholesterol leads to atherosclerosis.
1) There's no evidence that eating foods with high cholesterol raises cholesterol
2) There's no evidence that elevated cholesterol leads to atherosclerosis. I couldn't find any studies on this, since it's difficult to prove.
Moreover, participants in a low carb diet are found, in every clinical trial done, to provide the best health markers. Go to minute 23 in this video for this one two-year study.
Get blood tests and check your numbers. You can put out all the info and research you like, but they'll only believe you if you can give hard numbers that are good. For me, it was a bit odd, but my numbers didn't change much before or after I started eating eggs for breakfast (2 though, not 5-7 like you).

This is a sideways answer but I wanted to share this with you It is a newspaper report from England that talks about the side effects of cholesterol lowering statin drugs it talks about side effects like muscle weakness, confusion, and depression. It seems like lowering cholesterol in some people is not so good.
It is very very very difficult to 'convince' anyone who feels that eating fat equals high cholesterol otherwise. No amount of showing people research papers or newspaper reports seems to make any difference, in fact giving more 'facts' seem to turn off people even more - imho.
Only thing you can do is carry on doing what you are doing and let you mother see for herself. I did this with a friend, who completely doubted everything I told her about cholesterol and fat until one day she got her own cholesterol level tested and told me it was very low, even though she had been eating butter like it was going out of fashion. She then had to admit that I did have something going on that was worth looking into.
Tell your mom you fry everything in lard for breakfast daily, that should get her ears pricked up.......
