Google and Meetup have failed to turn up any kind of organized paleo group in my area. Does one exist that I don't know about? Would any D.C. locals be interested in starting one?

But, the leader of PaleoDC isn't too good at organizing regular events, so I would highly encourage you to start your own Meetup. I'll join.

Yeah, I joined the Primal group and we scheduled a potluck, but only three people signed up so it was canceled. Plus it was a bit far away for me. – DAC Mar 12 2011 at 4:33

There is a Facebook meetup group called The DC meetup. 2 weeks ago we had a paleo potluck dinner and tomorrow we are having s bacon themed brunch.

awesome - thank you! – DAC Mar 12 2011 at 13:23
Paleo DC Meat UP represent! I can't make the brunch tomorrow but I am looking forward to all the summer activities we all talked about. – MikeD Mar 12 2011 at 17:33

I've yet to find a group in NOVA either, but I do know a number of people who are paleo - all CrossFitters. :) What part of DC are you in? Maybe NOVA and DC can combine together? Just a thought...

I'm in upper NW, near American University. NOVA is a pretty big area, but if your group isn't too far outside the city I'd confront my fear of the suburbs to meet some new, like-minded friends. ;) I'm not a CrossFitter, though. Seems like all the cool kids are, but honestly, it scare the bejeezus out of me. – DAC Mar 12 2011 at 4:28
I've been doing CrossFit for over a year and it STILL scares the bejeezus out of me. :) – April Mar 12 2011 at 5:03

I'm in the Northern Virginia area. I don't know of any in this area currently but I would definitely be interested in getting involved in starting something here.

So there's interest, which raises the question: What do we do? Hiking... eating... maybe some yoga? Too late for a ski trip. That's all that comes to mind at the moment. – DAC Mar 12 2011 at 4:40
Those sound good. I think anything that would get any interested parties together & give the chance to network, participate in & share ideas, places to eat, shop for paleo items, outdoor activities, etc would be great. I live in Fredericksburg but work in Manassas & would definitely be willing to drive for something this important to me! That probably sounds corny, but I feel it's worth the effort. – Eileen Mar 17 2011 at 4:36

I'm in NOVA also. I'd be interested.

I'm a newbie Paleo in the DC area on the MD side. Definitely interested in finding a group!

I am in southern NOVA ;) LOL! Down towards Fredericksburg VA. Would love to have a meet up of some sort but DC Metro is HUGE and we all know what traffic is like. haha Going to sign up for the meetup groups - could not find the FB group.

This is where I'm located too! Couldn't agree more about the traffic. – Eileen Mar 17 2011 at 4:26
Not to go totally off topic, but how do you like Fredericksburg? We're looking at possibly moving to that area from Maryland. I'd be commuting south to Richmond. We're looking for decent schools for the kids. Thanks. – RobE Feb 26 2012 at 18:13

Another NOVA resident here.

Quite a turnout in this thread so far. :-)

I and my two paleo friends can come up and represent Southern MD! :)

Great - so... what do we do? I'm new at this - paleo, and organizing. – DAC Mar 13 2011 at 1:30
DAC - see my post, below. I think you'll have a good turnout. I'd post something on my Facebook page, and perhaps others would, too. – Lee Mar 14 2011 at 15:54

I'm in the close-in VA suburbs.

Okay, there seems to be a quorum here. How about putting a post here that suggests a time/place to meet up.

I know the Meetup group had a potluck recently with everyone bringing a potluck dish. How about that or - perhaps for an initial meeting - even meeting for coffee? Might be best to start out with something easy.

I'd love to get involved in something for summer, so please - let's get something going!

Coffee - excellent idea. Of course, we'll have to bring our own heavy cream. ;) Do I just start a new thread to schedule it, then? (I'm still newish to PH; not sure what is the done thing.) – DAC Mar 14 2011 at 16:14
DAC - not really sure. I'm fairly new here and not sure what the moderators allow. I suppose you could either (a) start a new facebook group, (b) start a new meetup group. I know there are a couple, but it might be nice to have another one just to have more events to choose from; or (c) set up a gmail account, post it here, and ask people on this thread to email you if they're interested. I do NOT know whether the mods would allow you to post an email address here. They may not. If not, and if you do (a) or (b), just post it here and hopefully folks will find it. – Lee Mar 14 2011 at 17:59

Adams Morgan! I'd love to meet up with some like-minded folks. Too bad the Meetup group just closed. I'm tempted to start another one.

Hi everyone! My husband & I are in the DC area & just created a Facebook group called DC Paleo & Twitter {@dcpaleo}. Either search it on Facebook or once you're logged in {it doesn't seem to let me create a link to provide}. Looking forward to getting together with other Paleo peeps in this area!

Hey! Check out my facebook group, "DC Healthy Bites". We represent a community of individuals with dietary restrictions due to food allergies, autoimmune disease or susceptibility, or because we have overall food and health concerns. As someone who maintains a Paleo lifestyle, I so often am discouraged, intimated, and conflicted when dining out, and having friends who have severe allergies (nuts and gluten) and having witnessed their dining difficulties and horrible experiences, I decided to start this initiative. Our goal is to not only spread awareness and develop synergy with local area restaurants but to ultimately generate a freely accessible online resource which the community can use to find reliable information on where to dine and what to order without having to worry about compliancy or their safety. We are different from The DC Meat Up facebook group and other Paleo meetups in that our focus is specifically on local area restaurants and their compliancy and/or willingness to comply.

Our success will be celebrated at a special event in the Spring with the launch of a freely available community restaurant guide and fundraising initiative. If you are interested in making a difference please email me (dchealthybites@gmail.com), comment below, or request to join DC Healthy Bites, and I will contact you with how you can get involved.
