I understand that lysine and leucine can help bring on ketosis while sparing muscle tissue. Can anyone tell me more about that? How much to take, when, best way to eat/drink/ingest, whether this is only a body-builder type thing? Anything else I might need to know?

I'm pre-diabetic and despite staying quite tight on diet (will be making that extremely tight control), I'm still hitting higher BG numbers than I want.

About BG numbers: make sure you limit starch and fruit, and control the amount of protein you eat too. Make fat your fuel, ESP coconut, avocado, olive, and ruminant animal fats (butter cream and beef). – Matt Baldwin Mar 12 2011 at 13:49
I'm already doing all that, but tightening it up - ie: eliminating the small amount of fruit (berries) that I ate and the very occasional full fat greek yogurt. I already eat a lot of coconut milk, coconut oil and butter/ghee. Because I am already doing all this is why I am interested in the effects of lysine and luecine and the best ways of using them. – Karen Mar 12 2011 at 14:54
Resistance training is key for me. Have you read Dr. Bernetrin's diabetes book? It is a must! – Lee Mar 15 2011 at 11:47
Very interested in information and results here. My wife is a recently-diagnosed epileptic, and we're trying to make her (and my) diet as ketogenic as possible. We will be able to participate in an adult-oriented ketogenic treatment program, which will hopefully allow reduction or elimination of her medication in favour of diet, under appropriate medical supervision... but not until December. In the meantime, we're looking for the benefits of ketosis as a supplemental treatment. – uep Sep 14 2011 at 2:17

Ketogenic Diets, I: Ways to Make a Diet Ketogenic is a recent post from The Perfect Health Diet blog that goes into some details about this.

Thanks, I think that post (or maybe their book) was what put me on the track of lysine & leucine. I just posted a question in that thread re: amounts. – Karen Mar 12 2011 at 16:23
I'm also getting more hardcore about the other factors they list and lists of how to get into ketosis here. I'm starting to think I don't have the leeway many others here do. – Karen Mar 12 2011 at 16:25
Oh, okay, I wasn't sure if you had seen that or not. I don't have much leeway either. I eat no carbs at all. – Ambimorph Mar 12 2011 at 19:52

I think this would be a good question to ask Paul Jaminet at the Perfect Health blog or Kurt Harris at his blog. I'm interested in learning about this, too.

I've posted a question over at The Perfect Health blog at the thread listed by Ambimorph. If I get an answer I will link to it. I understood that Kurt Harris wasn't answering comments anymore. Yes/No? – Karen Mar 12 2011 at 16:33
Yes/No is exactly right. He is turning them on and off judiciously at this point. – Ambimorph Mar 12 2011 at 19:54
