Over the last couple of months three of my friends have listened to my ramblings and decided to give paleo a go. Unfortunately all 3 of them have failed within the first week - one because she had intense carb cravings and the other 2 because they both had episodes of feeling as though they were going to faint. One was riding his bike at the time and the other was home alone with a young child so both felt this wasn't something they could just work through. When I first went paleo I didn't experience this but I was never a big carb eater in the first place. I did stress that they needed to eat plenty of fat but I think this is the hardest part of the diet to get across - the low fat message is so ingrained. Anyone got any suggestions to encourage them to give it another go? All 3 are interested in the weight loss aspect of the diet - which was not my motivation - so I wonder if they just cut out the processed food and didn't replace it with enough fat and protein based calories.
Have them transition more slowly. They should definitely eliminate grains and sugar, but have them slowly decrease the carbs every week and slowly increase the fats. Allow them to eat starches and fruits in the beginning and then taper them down as necessary. Eventually, they will reach a high-fat, low-carb, very paleo equilibrium.
I didn't feel faint but I did lose 12 lbs the first week which would seem to me to indicate that I had a substantial fluid loss. Changing that much fluid volume in a short period of time seems like it could play havoc with BP and mineral balance not tht that gives you an answer but if that is the problem going more slowly does seem like a good fix.
I went through a phase similar to this, although it was a month or so in. It was definitely due to me wanting to lose weight faster, as such, I cut down fat intake. It was borderline hell.
Up the fat. Agree though, very tough to get that message across.
These people's bodies are not acclimated to buring fat and protein and to using the protein to produce enough glucose....thus the low blood sugar that caused the fainting. They are not keto adapted yet. Do exactly as Haig says, and they will do fine...especially about elimination of the wheat and sugar. They will lose the desired weight and will be much more healthy when they finally arrive at being adapted to burning meat and fat.
I think it's hard to pin down the exact cause. I felt a bit of this in the early months. It was not low blood sugar as I tested for that with my home glucometer. And I was eating plenty of fat. I had only lost a few pounds so I don't think it was that. I was also actually eating fruit about once per day at lunch, but no tubers or grains. The feeling was sorta like just dizzy or spaced out for just a second or two, but I did not feel like I was actually in danger of falling over or anything. But I could see how this might freak out some people. Later, it just went away. I wrote it off as some kind of adaptation issue. It wasn't really unpleasant or anything, just a bit strange.
