Last time I went to the beach, we stopped by the grocery store to grab lunch and I ended up with breaded fried chicken. I'm planning a trip for this weekend and I don't want to repeat that lunch.

I'm planning to bring some fruit and veggies, but I am trying to think of something more substantial to chow down on after swimming in the ocean as I'm always hungry when I get back to my towel.

What is a good, paleo-friendly, finger-food lunch that can be eaten on the beach? Wind and sand (and seagulls) are factors to take into consideration...anything too light WILL fly away and sand is guaranteed to be an ingredient. 8)

Thanks!

on the beach I ordered gazpacho and a pedicure......it was paleorific. – The Quilt Apr 7 2011 at 2:32

I would bring hard boiled eggs, already peeled, to make it easier and some bacon.

I also always carry whatever my current version of Paleo Trail Mix is. This week it is unsweetened organic coconut flakes, raw macadamia nuts and dried unsweetened pineapple.

The trail mix is a great idea! I've been on a pineapple kick lately, so I might steal that for my mix. – Ali Mar 14 2011 at 20:04

Do your grocery stores sell those rotisserie chickens? You can get one the night before so you can have it cut up ahead of time. Cold chicken is taylor made for picnics.

Note, I know the rotisserie chickens aren't 100% paleo because of the additives, but they make a good easy meal once in a while. – Carl_Stawicki Mar 14 2011 at 13:09
Good plan! And it's better than the fried chicken. 8) – Ali Mar 14 2011 at 20:03

If you have an insulated bag, maybe bring some guac w/ plantain chips & raw veggies. I like the rotisserie chicken idea- Harvestland brand is gluten free; I've only seen them at my local BJs though.

I have a Sam's Club around here. I'm not sure if their chicken is gluten free. I will check it out the next time I'm in there. The guac is a great idea! Thanks! – Ali Mar 14 2011 at 20:05

I love ceviche at the beach. It's cold, satisfying and has lots of good fats. Just pack it in a plastic container and then an insulated bag or small cooler.

Ok now you have me dreaming of summer, thanks a lot!

I live on a beach so sand and seaguls are part of daily life (as is the wind of course!)

Boiled eggs, cubes of meat and cheese and a little stick thing to stab them with.

Or meat rolls....rolled up thin steak with vegis inside...but these can be messy, but very yummy.

I work on the beach as an ocean lifeguard and my staple noshes include: nitrate free jerky, fresh fruit, dried fruit from trader joes, avocados, guacamole, lettuce wraps with nitrate free meats, grilled chicken, almond butter and banana (dip banana into almond butter or make sliced banana's with almond butter and fresh jelly sandwiches), you can do some paleo alchemy and create your own trail mix from mixed nuts, dried fruit, fresh rotisserie chickens are great too. Options are endless!

Oreo cookies. The frosting between the cookies melts in the hot beach sun. No doubt that Grok ate Oreos on the beach. This is what my mom did in the 80's because they are low in fat and cholesterol so they must be ok.

Edit: sorry. the above was slanted humor to elucidate a point but I suppose it's not actually very helpful. i don't really think oreos are ok. lol.

My top picks for beach snacks:

cooked bacon

parmesiano reggiano cheese (a very hard and dry cheese that probably would resist melting)

macadamia nuts

blueberries

beef jerky

Beef or chicken satay, on a stick makes it easy to eat.

I like chicken salad or curried egg salad for cold picnic lunches.

Just spent a week at the cottage, day boating trips to the beach. One day we bbq some ribeyes, wrap in tinfoil. Added some raw veggies, made some guac and hardboiled eggs and bobs your uncle. Another day we brought hot italian sausages, mustard and hardboiled eggs. Everything was delicious cold and the steaks were still warm and melt in your mouth. Just bring what you enjoy.

Make sure you cook your steaks med rare or closer to rare because they are sitting for a while. – Chelsea Aug 21 at 13:34

You can pre-make some asparagus wrapped bacon, that's always nice.

Regular bacon.

(Again) Hard boiled eggs.

For dinner once I tried making paleo friendly shepherds pie cupcakes, which I guess would be shepherds cupcakes? Basically I cooked ground beef, filled cupcake wrappers (? I had a blank on what theyre called) a quarter full with a mix of coconut flour/eggs, then filled in some ground beef, topped it off with some more of the "batter," topped THAT off with pureed sweet potato, and BAM! Cute ol' finger food.

It was better w hot sauce.
