Apples are not anti-Paleo, you just should eat them in moderation. – sherpamelissa Mar 15 2011 at 2:33

KL,

Just cause it fills you up, doesn't mean it's good, if that's what you're diggin at. Actually I'm not really sure what you're diggin at. 4+ apples per day is horrendous. So I'm glad you stopped doing that. Anyway I think if you eat anything the size of an apple 4 times a day, that it would fill you up. 4 apples a day is still not a good idea.

I actually started to get right side pains -- which I always thought was due to too much coffee. Then I started reading about fructose intolerence -- BINGO. – KL Mar 14 2011 at 20:45
where did you have your 'right side pains' KL? what did it feel like? – Jack Kronk Mar 14 2011 at 21:23
I had the same thing,KL..my right side(ribs and chest) would completely lock from the pain – bittykitty Mar 14 2011 at 21:43
you are not alone, I thought it was kidney related. Got worse lying down. – DudleyP Mar 15 2011 at 10:54

Apples do weird things to my tummy and spike my blood sugar like crazy. They also give me this weird pain that feels like hunger, but isn't exactly. Very strange.

However, bananas. Ye olde sugar bombs? I love them, and I can eat one and not want to eat again for hours. So strange how different fruits affect us differently. :)

banana is starchy in addition to it's fructose. that's why it fills up better than an apple. and if you get an unripe banana, it's even more starchy. – Jack Kronk Mar 15 2011 at 14:07
That makes sense, Jack. I used to enjoy those sickly-sweet spotted brown bananas, but since adopting a Paleo diet, I now I prefer the ones that still have a bit of green on them. :) – Kaz Mar 15 2011 at 18:12

A lot of people eat apples when they aren't ripe. Heck, they taste good when they aren't ripe. But unripe fruit also contains a lot pectin. Apples in the store during the off-season usually need a week or so of ripening before they are edible. – No more. Aug 24 2011 at 23:20

Can you tolerate cooked apples? Like in applesauce. Raw apples bloat me belly, but if I cook them down it's all good. I think it must break down the pectin? Mayhaps. I dunno, but it works for me. – none Aug 25 2011 at 21:45

Eating an apple always leaves me hungry. I've never tried eating 4! I would hope I wouldn't be hungry after that many. I believe that protein is what satiates hunger and not fiber rich foods.

Ditto. Eating an apple if I'm a bit peckish is almost always counterproductive for me. – Kimmie Aug 25 2011 at 11:27

Well, a large apple has about 15g of fructose and only 10mg of vitamin C. That's a pretty terrible ratio, if you ask me. It would not be ideal if it were your only source of vitamin C. On the other hand, it wouldn't really be that bad if it were your only source of fructose and you got additional vitamin C from elsewhere.

It might be worthwhile to at least eat them at times of low liver glycogen so that fewer triglycerides are manufactured. If you ate all 4 for breakfast, it would be better than during times of near-maximal liver glycogen stores.

Are you not eating them because they gave you problems or because someone is telling you they are evil and you shouldn't have them? I'm of the opinion that they are not as bad as some make them out to be. Eat them like Grok did. In season and occasionally. Grok didn't flood himself with sugar year round and that is what you want to copy. I don't see any need to avoid them altogether. I'm sure if Grok ran across an apple tree loaded with delicious apples he ate them. He just couldn't run out to a grocery store and get them every day. I know some say that modern day apples are sweeter, but I say hog wash. Prove it to me. Even if they are sweeter, are they really that bad? I don't think so. Everything in moderation.

Fats are satiating. Try adding a few nuts or other fat foods to your fiber foods.

It's possible it wasn't the fiber that was making you feel full.
