Does PaleoHacks.com censor people or ideas? As Ignacio suggests here:

http://paleohacks.com/questions/27605/what-is-the-best-brand-of-hamburgers-in-east-wichita#axzz1GaaXaej7

after PaleoHacks admins deleted a previous question of his.

This is a question on me but I am unable to answer since you suspended my account...It does not sound fair to me. Also I never insulted anybody just disagreed with the reasons and the system to close a question. Anyway, I appreciate paleohacks and the chance I had to communicate with many intelligent people here..Cheers – Philosopher Mar 15 2011 at 5:57
I cleared your suspension. Don't make me regret it. – Patrik Mar 15 2011 at 5:59
Thanks Patrick please understand I am kind of emphatic, but would never try to upset you! – Philosopher Mar 15 2011 at 6:08

I am going to write this very, very, very simply.

Paleohacks is unable to indulge in any form of "censorship" of Free Speech as censorship as it is generally defined is between two parties:

1) A government. 2) A private individual.

A government ostensibly protects an individual's right to Free Speech. For example, one could go into a public space and say all sorts of horrible things that may be deeply offensive, hateful, wrong etc etc --- but as long as one is not causing physical violence -- this sort of Free Speech behavior is both tolerated and protected.

Got that? Great, because PaleoHacks is not a government --- and has no obligation to publish or protect your speech.

What that means is that if you write something stupid or off-topic or hateful or I-simply-don't-like-it -- it might get deleted. End of story.

This is not censorship - this is me and my PaleoHacks admins managing the site. We will manage it to MY WHIMS. <------ Yes. All mine. :)

PS So far, I have been hands-off and generally very flexible. Don't test me.

PPS Don't whine if your question gets deleted and don't take it personally.

+1 Well said, Patrik. – Ben Mar 15 2011 at 12:58

The government-citizen dichotomy of censorship is brought up by many a pedant whenever censorship is discussed on online forums. American Heritage Dictionary (from 2000) doesn't even recognize government's role. Censoring: "A person authorized to examine books, films, or other material and to remove or suppress what is considered morally, politically, or otherwise objectionable." No mention of a state actor at all. Given that any mod on any forum is "authorized" to examine and remove objectionable material, it can and should be called censorship. – Wisper Dec 27 2011 at 11:25
Well said by both Patrik and Whisper. To put it another way, there is lawful and unlawful censorship: lawful is when I do it, unlawful is when the government does. – Blitherakt May 12 2012 at 3:19
Great answer!!! – Eric May 12 2012 at 6:25

I hope this isn't out of place but I thought I could offer something that might help clarify.

I think that when Patrik says that you shouldn't take it personally if your question gets closed he really does mean it. I know it's hard not to react that way, since there's that huge bold lettering "Question closed as off topic": it makes you feel like you've done something very bad. But lots and lots of very active paleohackers have had posts closed or even deleted in the past and they're still going at it. (No comment on whether or not this has happened to me, ha ha ...) Agreed, it doesn't always make sense why one thread is closed and not another, but the site has to be kept clean, after all, and there will inevitably be some gray area.

I think it's best viewed this way: OK, that was a bump in the road -- now it's time to keep on paleohackin'.

begin persnickety sarcasm

Well, I'm really upset because my question about eating 17 quarts of coconut oil daily to make sure my output conforms to the paleo standard was deleted. I mean really! I just wanted to make sure that I was eating the RIGHT BRAND and getting the PALEO APPROVED (TM pending) output.

end persnickety sarcasm

Thanks to all the moderators who keep this from turning into a midden of drivel.

Oh give me my daily drivel please. And make sure your answer is in the form of a question. – thhq Dec 27 2011 at 13:28
Is drivel paleo? – Woodey May 12 2012 at 1:35
Strictly speaking, no... While high in fat, it has a generally poor n-3 to n-6 ratio, a glycemic index of 32, and contains cortisol-promoting compounds. I highly recommend the more paleo friendly "meaningless pap" to "meaningless drivel"; it's free range, ass-fed and far more satisfying! – Blitherakt May 12 2012 at 3:14

Is paleodietlifestyle connected to the brand of socks I wear? To my bad relationship with my cousin from Alabama?

What.ev.er. I didn't delete that post, but fully support the mod who did. This site shouldn't be allowed to slip into complete parody and the histronics of internet drama kings.

I wish that the "only ask questions that have an answer" rule was enforced more strictly, and I really appreciate it when you guys do enforce it. Thanks for all your hard volunteer work to keep the signal-to-noise ratio at PH high. – Elizabeth Mar 15 2011 at 10:03
Then why don't more people vote to close some of these questions? Sometimes I'm on the fence and I'm not sure. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Mar 15 2011 at 18:30

I realize that people are passionate but it’s too easy to point the unwarranted virtual finger. I don't know who started this site or all the details about the moderating. It is clearly not monetized so I believe the moderators do this for free? The administrators are spending time on something that has directly benefitted me...at no cost to me. Being rude or irreverent on this site likens to me going to somebody’s house for dinner, proceeding to get belligerent--then expect to be invited to stay for dessert. Yes so some posts get deleted for content or whatever. If you want to have a site where you can do whatever you want then I would advise to start your own...that is the simple solution. I also appreciate that the site stays pretty clean in case I would like to refer somebody like my Mom to it.

Yep. Forums, blogs, websites -- I behave in them as I would in someone's home. If I don't like the atmosphere, I'll just leave, rather than whine. And if I need a platform for my own speech, I'll start my own site. – Rose Aug 19 2011 at 16:39

I think that it can be pretty anal at times. There's always http://reddit.com/r/paleo for a freer exchange of views. Reddit is to the www what usenet used to be to the internet.

No, I wouldn't say that it censors people or ideas.

I know there are some mighty eyes watching us from above, but in general they are not intrusive. However, I have to say that there have been a couple of instances in which a question was closed without any good reson, in my opinion.

Glad that Ignacio is back, I would have missed his questions.

It's only censorship when the government does it.

I appreciate the spirit, but not quite correct... It's only unconstitutional censorship when the government does it. :) – Blitherakt May 12 2012 at 3:17

Regarding the moderating in general, it might be viewed more favorably if comments were added to the OP stating something to the effect of "please edit this post to be less political, vague, argumentative, more apropos etc." and then edit/close their post if they do not comply rather than altering without warning.

We do that sometimes --- but there are far too few of us & far too many questions to offer explanations every time. C'est la vie. – Patrik Aug 20 2011 at 11:42
Fine, you don't explain me why you delete my questions. But why did I get suspended because you didn't like my question? Can't you just give me a warning? – Korion Oct 1 2011 at 10:51

Yes, we do censor people and "ideas." If your "ideas" involve harassing other users or narcissistic histrionics, we do not tolerate that. Hint: if your answer to a question is "CONFORM OR GET BANNED. BY ALL INTENTION, DO NOT BE YOURSELF OR BE HONEST. YOU HAVE NO FREEDOM OF SPEECH HERE." Well, that's what I call a self-fulfilling prophecy. There are tons of unpopular ideas expressed here by some of our valued community members, so it's not about unpopular opinions, but about whether or not your behavior is anti-social.

I stopped my activities here when a question I asked was removed without notice or comment by Patrik. The question I had asked was about our Congressman and their vote to let Pizza be listed as a vegetable in school lunches. It was getting responses right away and then it was taken down. Two days later it was being talked about in the mainstream media.

Now I'm starting to visit PlaeoPlan's new forums. I wonder how long this response will remain in this thread?

Just asking--if you stopped your activities here how did you post this answer? Hey, we all can disagree or get our feelings hurt--mine were bruised yesterday--but overall this is a terrific place for conversation. – Nance Dec 27 2011 at 18:14
Paul Brin, your question was one of politics. I don't allow politics on PaleoHacks. End of story. – Patrik Dec 28 2011 at 4:31

Dear Patrik you said, while addressing my question-thread on censorship, environmental disasters and paleo-view that "you write something stupid or off-topic or hateful or I-simply-don't-like-it -- it might get deleted." I am sure my question was not stupid, there is nothing hateful on being worried about the environment (in particular with enormous disasters going on lately) and not even off-topic, unless there is a rather narrow definition of what paleo hacks is about, like being very restrictive about just talking on diet, etc. Should I conclude that questions like that one get closed down just because you or some other hackers "do not like it"? I am not arguing about your legal right to do it, it is just that, if that is the prevailing attitude, I would have much less incentives to participate at paleohacks.

Ignacio - read the FAQ. It is off-topic at PH if: "Avoid asking questions that are overly subjective, argumentative, or require extended discussion. This is not a discussion board nor a blog, this is a place for questions that can be answered!" – Elizabeth Mar 15 2011 at 17:49

Ignacio -- as Elizabeth points out your question was not really a question - 1) it was an argumentative discussion 2) and I thought it was stupid. (Sorry, but being honest with you). 3) This is the nature of all forum-type sites on the web. 4) Your hysteria/drama is NOT appreciated BTW. 5) As a gesture of kindness, I lifted your suspension. 6) Get over all of this already. – Patrik Mar 15 2011 at 18:01
I think the hysteria/drama is what you plus people as Elizabeth (always on the close thing stuff!)create with an obsessive, control-oriented mentality. If I were in your place I would not take issue at anything that is not insulting or hateful, nor close it. BTW on a personal level I do not accept apologies of anyone calling me "stupid". – Philosopher Mar 15 2011 at 18:11
Ignacio --- For the record, your question was stupid, not you. Also, I am not apologizing to you. I have nothing to apologize for. You have tried my patience too far. I have made every effort to accommodate you - I even lifted your suspension as to give you the benefit of the doubt. Bottom line: On PaleoHacks, you have to play by MY rules. If not, you can either leave voluntarily or I will delete your account. – Patrik Mar 15 2011 at 19:27

What that means is that if you write something stupid or off-topic or hateful or I-simply-don't-like-it -- it might get deleted. End of story.

I'm okay with that. But why did my 'Did your penis grow' post get deleted while I was being completely serious. I even got a decent scientific answer. And even if it was wishful thinking, the post didn't harm anybody in any possible way. Deleting such a question is like censoring a book because you don't like the title.

I don't HAVE to go here to get paleo answers. Heck, if I want I can make my own website and moderate it myself. On the other hand, I like the design, only two of my questions got deleted, and there's a lot of great people here, so I don't see why I would leave.

But please - tell people when you delete a question.

Sorry -- don't have time to do so -- check out what the FAQ say about that. – Patrik Jul 25 2011 at 16:59
What time? Can't you automate that? – Korion Jul 26 2011 at 14:12

I'm fine with having the questions moderated. It is indeed necessary to keep the quality high. Just sometimes I'm surprised when a question just disappears. I guess this is a deletion. But doesn't it make more sense to only close those to also give others a chance to see why that question was closed? Maybe lower the number of votes to close a question to 2 or 3 and give a good reasoning why it was closed.

Then again, thanks to all Mods for their contribution to this great site ;-)

Whoever runs the site has the right to do whatever they feel like doing. If they see a post or question they don't like then they will remove it. If a person feels wronged by having something removed a he/she can either cry about it (which will get them nowhere) or they can start their own blog. Another option would be to post elsewhere like Facebook, there are many online outlets for a person to express themselves.

What I find funny and ironic are people who get themselves censored, they are more than likely to do it themselves if they where in charge and would feel just as righteous.

"Pardon me sir, would you like some french cries with that wahburger?"
