First, let me apologize if this has been covered before. By my family has recently come over to paleo nutrition after my strict adherence for about 6 months. With that, we have made the decision to have my 2 year old eat paleo as well with the exception of drinking milk (raw milk) but there is a bit of dairy in her diet.
With that being said, with all the wild caught fish, fresh CSA veggies and beef/pork/lamb from Polyface, and Omega-3 eggs, I still want to make sure we are helping my daughter by supplementing with Omega 3. It is going to be difficult to get her to swallow or chew any pills and she refuses to take "shots" of fish oil. My question, do any of you whose children eat paleo use any fish oil supplements with your children?
It just doesn't make sense for her not to take advantage of additional omega-3.
From my understanding of why we take Fish Oil, it's to balance out the damage we have previously done to our bodies with too much Omega 6. If she has always eaten grassfed meat and does not have too much Omega 6 in her body, she shouldn't really need a fish oil supplement.
Much wisdom in the above answers, however my 2 year, 8 month old son's diet is much worse, so I'm stuck with supplementing.

I chewed one of his chewable fish oil gelcaps and they tasted (to me) quite similar to his vitamin D chewables (I wouldn't ask him to eat anything I wouldn't), but I couldn't get him to eat the softgels. So I've been crushing the gelcaps in a very tiny amount of milk, squeezing all the oil out, and extracting the empty gelcap. Then I top off with a normal amount of milk (another 3-4 ounces) and he likes it just fine.
I have used Nordic Naturals with great success. My son loves the Children's DHA strawberry chewable softgel (no sugar in these) and begs for more. For the younger kids NN now has Baby's DHA with vitamin D with a liquid dropper to add to food or formula. NN also has many Cod liver oil liquids in lots of flavors. NN does 3rd party testing for purity and potency and has a green initiative to protect the seas and fish populations. Omega-3s are essential and need to be consumed daily whether from food or supplements. At this point eating fish is too risky with the high contamination levels and mercury content. We use supplements because they process these contaminants out.
Fish oil is generally taken to balance out a high concentration of Omega 6 in the diet. It sounds like you've done a great job keeping her on a very healthy diet and thus the fish oil shouldn't be necessary. I would throw in some wild caught fish and call it a day!
I give my 3 year old son additional Omega 3 only because I cannot control what he eats at pre-school, so I know he is getting some non-paleo foods. I am currently giving him Nordic Naturals Omega 3 Gummy Fish. You have to be careful and look at the ingredients though. Some are sweetened with HFCS and contain soybean/canola oil. The Nordic is sweetened with organic tapioca syrup and organic evaporated cane juice. They have 5 grams of sugar, which kind of sucks, but I figure the added Omega 3's are worth it.
I've heard good things about Dr. Sears but not sure the ingredients.
Why not just use Carlson's Fish Oil liquid that comes in 15.9oz bottles available from http://www.swansonvitamins.com/CSN005/ItemDetail?n=0 or http://www.vitacost.com/Carlson-The-Very-Finest-Liquid-Fish-Oil for around $22 at both places. Local health store retail at $45. Carlson's also makes a Cod Liver Oil. We add it to our olive oil and vinegar for salads. Get the lemon flavored. We did not like the orange flavor. Should be very easy to incorporate into your kids home eating.
Also don't forget the vitamin D3 for the little one. Very important for development. Liquid Vit D3 is available.
I have both of my sons on Coromega w/ D3. They come in packets that look like ketchup packets and they honestly taste good. Like orange pudding (though there are other flavors). If you have kids I highly recommend. My boys request the "orange stuff" regularly. Be forwarned however Coromega is flavored with stevia.
Its hard. I'd like to have my boys on more of a Paleo diet but they take their lunch at preschool and their meals are decidedly carbtastic. So I've decided on a phased approach that will take years to implement. After the Coromega phase I do plan on switching to Carlsons.
My youngest two, ages 11 and 13 take fish oil capsules morning and night. They're old enough to swallow the capsules, although it took some practice when they first started taking them. We eat mostly paleo at home, but as someone mentioned, I can't control what they eat outside of home, so it eases my mind to supp 0-3, though not as much as when we first started paleo.
You should get tested for Vitamin D, triglycerides, HDL in the blood and compare before and after supplementation. Also keep a journal on symptoms like pain, joint pain, backache, dry eye, mood, brain alertness, etc. It can take 4-12 weeks for the Omega 3 supplements to work.
There are people in the 30s that are Vitamin D deficient in cold cloudy climates and people in the 60's Vitamin D deficient in sunny warm climates. At the same time you don't want to overdo any vitamin or mineral.
Omega6:3 also depends on how much conventional vs. pastured meat/dairy you are eating and how much you eat out.
I haven't tried fermented cod liver oil so I can't discuss that but I've been using unfermented fish oils for 5 years now.
Cod Liver Oil has Vitamin D but Fish Oil doesn't unless it's added. I prefer to use Carlson Cod Liver Oil Lemon flavor at home and Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega lemon flavor (4 capsules/day) when I travel. They have the amount of DHA/EPA that makes a difference for macular degeneration, heart disease, dry eye, etc. My understanding is that any omega-3 fatty acid supplement should be taken with a fatty meal or at least a fatty snack (not on empty stomach) for the body to absorb it well such as eggs, red meat, seafood, etc.
