I got a pedometer recently and I really like it. I was shocked at how little I move at home. I play tennis and do fitness for several hours a day, but when I get home it's so easy just to sit down and not move at all. With the pedometer, I am encouraged to move and walk around, which I have been trying to do more of. I love numbers, so working towards a set goal of steps is actually fun for me. I try to get 15000 a day on days I don't do tennis. So, my question is:
Does anyone use a pedometer? What has your experience been? Do you try to aim for a set number of steps or some other goal?
I have a really awesome pedometer that I bought from my gym for a gym challenge. If anyone cares I will find it and put in the details. It was around $25.
I found that I don't move AT ALL. My job is sedentary. On a non-exercise day I can move as little as 2000/3000 steps. When I ran a 5K last week and then went shopping I was over 10,000 but that is really rare.
We are currently doing a pedometer challenge at my work it's amazing how much the guys in our warehouse move! Some over them are over 20.000 steps every single day!
I think it's fun to track. I know it helps reinforce in my head, why I NEED to exercise in order to lose or maintain weight due to how little I move otherwise.
Be careful not to push yourself too far, 15000+ a day is a lot. Just do what you do and see where you end up. It is not necessary to move that much EVERY day. Your tennis days are even more steps, your non-tennis days should be restful. /mom

I love tracking and numbers, so it would be right up my alley. I do know I walk quite a bit each day as a college student, and would be curious to find out how much. Maybe I'll pick up another; I know they're very inexpensive, since I got my first one at the dollar store. :)
Have a opt in wellness program at work that includes a pedometer that uploads to a website that tracks steps, aerobic steps, etc. I basically wear it 24/7. Agree it is not fun to see how sedentary one is, but knowledge is power!
I use one occasionally, to see how many steps I am taking in a day. Most recommendations say to aim for 8000-10000 steps per day. Since my daily routine is fairly constant, I don't need to wear it every day to have an idea of my activity level. Some of the newer devices using accelerometry, like the FitBit, may provide even better data. Not sure why smartphones can't do this for us in the background.
I wear one every day. It was from amazon.com about $20. It keeps a memory on it of 7 days. I write down all my steps for no reason...LOL...with all of my workout info that includes what the workout was and how long. I tally at the end of the week. I just like to think that it keeps me honest. I also keep track of what I eat. Just my personality! I have some really good days (over 10,000) and some really bad days around 4000. It is usually related to whether I power walk that day.
