you need to see somebody about it.....dont blow it off. Could be simple like a metabolic issue with Na Ca or Mg but, could be a moderate issue like Carpal tunnel syndrome or signs of hyperinsulemia.....or it could be cervical myelopathy from cord compression. Never mess around with this symptom. Get it evaluated son.

I don;t have health insurance sadly. Coincidentally, it started when I ran out of coconut oil and started consuming lots of butter. I also began supplementing 200mg of calcium. – rob Mar 20 2011 at 16:02
it does not matter if youdont have insurance. You got the ER and tell them you have new onset numbness in your arms since you just began working out and you also have notice some weakness.....especially when you move your neck.......they have to treat you for free. Its called EMTALA. There is my PSA for the day. Get it checked. This doctors order.....not a suggestion! Good Luck – The Quilt Mar 20 2011 at 17:40

There must be a free clinic around as well, at least, I'd think, within a 50 mile radius. Unless you live in v. rural area, in which case you'd have the option Dr. K suggests. – Marina Mar 20 2011 at 20:08

im not trying to freak you out, and im not at all implying that what is going on with you is what was going on with me, but thats exactly the first symptom that got me on a path that ended with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. it started in my fingertips, and for about a week i thought i had a pinched nerve. but it kept spreading and getting worse until my hands and chest were totally numb and i had numbness and tingling going up my arms. finally my husband forced me to call my PCP. because of the length of time from the onset of sx, i was seen the next day. a simple, inexpensive blood test showed that my CRP was about 50 mg/L.

im just saying that those sx could be nothing, or could be everything and deserve to be checked out. you dont have to immediately go in for a T3 MRI, but i think that it would be worth your $$ to ask your PCP for a bit of bloodwork.

Thanks. I never thought these symptoms were so serious. I have had them on and off for years now, but I was always curious as to what caused them. – rob Mar 20 2011 at 22:14
well, its most likely just repetitive stress injury or something. these little quirks of out bodies are usually just that, but of course the risk that it could be something more urgent is big enough that it warrants a checkup, IMHO. – being Mar 20 2011 at 23:02

I got this same feeling after eating too many raw, cruciferous vegetables. My theory was that the goitrogens were causing an iodine deficiency. Once I switched to cooked veggies instead of raw, the feelings went away.

possible.....Iron, in addition to iodine, selenium and zinc, are essential for normal thyroid hormone metabolism. Broccoli is loaded with indole 3 carbinol and sulpharanes. They have huge effects on DNA methylation and Histone acetylation and why they are so good against cancer and good for longevity. – The Quilt Mar 20 2011 at 19:33
Funny because all I have eaten all week has been cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage and bok choy. Maybe this is what is causing my symptoms. – rob Mar 20 2011 at 19:41
Iodine deficiency is totally possible. I have this problem right now and my diet is very low in iodine... Just ordered some liquid iodine, but in the meantime I'll eat my share of halibut again. – Korion Mar 3 2012 at 14:35

Could be a repetitive stress injury. These injuries are often part psycogenic but, if you think this could be your problem, it's worth laying off for a bit (e.g., limit typing, blackberry use, etc). If it doesn't get better, you should a doctor -- neurologist or other relevant specialist.

B vitamin deficiency can cause tingling in hands. I had this when on oral contraceptives which deplete body of b vitamins.

Thanks but I find it hard to believe I would be low in B vitamins. Maybe some sort of absorption problem? – rob Mar 20 2011 at 16:37
it can......but B depletion usually causes vibration sense changes and a macrocytic anemia...... – The Quilt Mar 20 2011 at 17:41
I was under the impression that some level of B-12 deficiency is fairly widespread, whether eating paleo or not. A damaged gut can cause absorption problems. – Hannah Mar 20 2011 at 21:18

The first time I ever had this feeling I found out I was a type 2 diabetic...

That is due to peripheral neuropathy. And that means you were diabetic a lot longer than you thought. I bet your HbAIc was off the chain too. That proves how long you been glycosalayting too. – The Quilt Mar 20 2011 at 17:42
Tim you need to read my question on the ACCORD trial.......very very important landmark study for any type two person. – The Quilt Mar 20 2011 at 18:02

It's called Paresthesia. There are lots of possible causes, I think you might have hypocalcaemia due to magnesium supplementation but not vitamin D supplementation.

There are tons of possible causes, you can look at the wikipedia article. Hypocalcaemia is, for some weird reason, not on the list, but Paresthesia is mentioned as a symptom in the wikipedia article about hypocalcaemia.

I have it too. I'm 99% certain I have hypothyroidism issues. Maybe due to iodine deficiency on the paleo diet. I have brittle hair, low libido, easily stressed, dry puffy skin, get easily constipated, I don't sleep well at all, ... I'm doooooomed. – MM Mar 6 2012 at 17:44
