I just ran out of my Rainbow Light Prenatal Multivitamin which prompted this post.

I eat Paleo+dairy and (not even going to lie) go on SAD binges here and there. Additionally, I live in an area where Walmart is the best grocery store in town. With all of that being said, the quality of my Paleo lifestyle isn't 10 for 10. Therefore, I feel I need supplementation and as the title says I'm breastfeeding a 100% Paleo baby (it's easy to be strict with your kid's diet, ha).

Currently I take Jarrow Max DHA 1200mg with my Rainbow Light Multivitamin. I know I need extra D3 but how much? Do I need to reorder my multivitamin? What else am I missing?

  1. Continue 4000 units of D3 per day for your own health.

  2. Give your baby 400 to 1000 units per day of vitamin D3 drops.

  3. 1200 mg of fish oil does not contain 1200mg of DHA. Make sure you're taking at least 200 to 300 mg of DHA per day.

  4. Continue a multivitamin supplement if your diet is inconsistent. Make sure it contains vitamin B12. B12 is important to nervous system development in babies, and high B12 levels during pregnancy have recently been linked to less irritable babies after delivery ( http://www.figo.org/news/vitamin-b12-intake-during-pregnancy-will-reduce-babies-crying-003469 ).

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed! My fish oil is 1200 mg with 500 mg DHA and 72 mg EPA per serving. Decent? – Al Mar 23 2011 at 2:17
500mg DHA per day is good – Ed Mar 23 2011 at 3:50
Is it necessary to give baby vitamin D3? Would baby not get this with breast milk? – Kartya13 Mar 7 at 3:55

Take a look at this blog by Don Mataez regarding a study conducted in Charleston, SC. Supplementing with 4000IU Vit D3 while carrying a baby has profound good effects on the health of the baby.

http://donmatesz.blogspot.com/2009/10/new-study-vitamin-d3-supplementation.html

And I have seen postings...can't find them now...but during breastfeeding the same 4,000IU for mom and 1000IU for the baby daily.

Edit: Vit D Council in this paper states that healthy children need 1000IU per 25 pounds of body weight and their serum level should be greater than 50 nanograms/milliliter.

Dr K has stated he wants his patients to have 70 to 100ng/mL...but I suspect that is for adults.

I wish my mom had eaten organ meats while she was pregnant with me; I'd probably be a superhuman of some sort right now.

I would say that you do not need to re-order the multivitamin. Just keep eating the way that you do. And definitely supplement baby with Vitamin D.

We didn't start down the paleo path until my son was weaned - but that being said, I ate a fairly paleo diet (besides about 2/week pasta and some refined sugar). I think it is very important to listen to your body while pregnant and breastfeeding - your body will let you know what you need - I craved milk products and red meat like mad when I was breastfeeding. So I ate both!
