I live in LA and have just been getting into Paleo over the past few months:

-Been wearing my vibrams when I can. Luckily our weather allows for much outdoor hiking & vitamin D obtaining...except when I'm stuck on the computer at work.

-Hunting down Paleo foods from Costco, Whole Foods, farmer's markets (Gourmets on wheels is at many farmer's markets in L.A., with their raw milk cheeses, duck fat, etc, and I've been meaning to track down the grass fed beef of http://www.bestbeefever.com/ which appears at Pasadena and Studio City farmer's markets)

-Seeking out ethnic small grocer's like Otto's Hungarian market in Burbank, where you can buy a pretty big tub of pork fat

-I'm attending a paleo cooking class on the 26th in Culver City: http://tilthforhealth.com/classes/

-I'm thinking of joining CrossFit high voltage in Burbank

But I've been meaning to ask about restaurants! I love Palate in Glendale, with things like their delicious potted rillettes like lamb, and pickled brussel sprouts (sounds strange but tastes amazing) they also have great pork belly.

I have heard of Animal, which I want to check out. I read those guys also have a new restaurant called Son of a Gun, which is more dedicated to fish & sparkling wines.

I also read of Salt's Cure, which seems to have many paleo friendly gourmet dishes.

Any recommendations?

I'm also a big fan of foie gras, which I try to order whenever I see it on a menu, but it's pretty rare to find it because of all the laws governing it (Most French restaurants still have it...and has anyone tried Jose Andres' foie gras 'cotton candy' at the Bazaar at SLS? I've been meaning to do that).

I love cooking at home, but I don't want to miss some of the spectacular dining we have in L.A....from hole-in-the wall ethnic places to Michelin-starred Providence-type places, I'm still a foodie and I love to try it all!

Go Paleo in L.A.!

Whoo hoo L.A! Been wanting to start some physical activity thing with a bunch of Paleo people in L.A, but no go so far. I'd have to say you're better off getting foie gras in France. Yeah, it's far, but your'e seriously getting ripped off in L.A. – Knarf Jun 28 at 6:02

also check out Rawesome in venice. Considering the variety and quality I do not think there is a better place to buy food in LA or anywhere else for that matter.

Definitely try Salt's Cure! Everything is made in house and these guys even visit the farms/ranches to guarantee the product they start with is is primo - then they prepare it to perfection!!! love this place.

pretty exciting

I was about to post that same link. Can't wait to try them out. L.A. now has its very own rockstar butchers to compete with those hipster butchers in NY and up north in SF. – haig Apr 6 2011 at 0:53

Really cool suggestions. I live in LA too and my partner and I have been on the paleo diet for about 5 months and it has been a challenge to find paleo friendly places to eat out at. I was actually just telling him that I need to start making some paleo friends or become a part of paleo communities other than in my virtual (computer) world. Anyway...I love love cooking paleo foods but it's definitely time I start getting out and meeting some folks. Anyway...the cooking class you mentioned sounds like a great opportunity to learn and mingle....I will check that. Cool

Thanks, Lulu

One great "paleo compatible" restaurant in LA is Tajrish Persian Kabob House.

Order the Koobideh Kabob and ask for salad instead of rice. It's just to die for.

There are also plenty of lamb, chicken, and fish items on the menu.

A good place for either breakfast or lunch (they close at 5pm) is Blu Jam Café on Melrose. My go-to dishes are the Power House and the Olympus (without the bread and either dressing on the side for the salad or just sub the salad for a fruit cup) for breakfast, and the Salmon and Spinach for lunch. Both are sooo good and they do breakfast all day if you're in the mood for eggs past noon. Here's the link for their menus: http://www.blujamcafe.com/menus/
