I know that gluten = bad and to some in the Paleo community gluten = horrible/avoid at all costs. I never eat any grains but upon research have been told by supplement companies that unless a supplement specifically says "gluten free" than it probably has trace elements of gluten. Does this trace amount really matter(Im not a celiac)? Gluten free supplements tend to be much more expensive. I know that some will say that supplements are not needed but I use them to help deal with specific medical issues so I take a handful daily.

I avoid all grains, no plant is going to poison me, so I'm very interested in what foods contain gluten. In my experience it is far better to eat real food that contains only one ingredient. Supplements are a worry tho, what can you do if they don't tell you?
I am gluten intolerant, so I have to take gluten-free supplements. So far the best ones I've found are New Chapter and Country Life. Freeda makes a gluten free line, too, but I haven't tried them. Some of them claim to be gluten-free on the label, but I've gotten a reaction anyway. If they don't randomly test the final product, the company has no way of knowing for sure if the ingredients they used to put together the pill haven't been cross-contaminated with gluten.
I try to take the gel supplements. For example, Now makes a gel vitamin D. The ingredients listed are olive oil, vitamin D and gelatin. Some "gluten free" supplements will use corn starch as a base (don't know if that's good either). The ingredients list should say what is used for a base. When it is not stated, you need to either weigh the benefits or avoid it. If you are allergic to gluten, there are enough companies out there making this stuff that you can find what works best for you and avoid the rest, even if you are on a budget.
