I'm 26, female, I currently weigh 198 and I want to lose about 40 pounds. On standard american "diet" I was eating anywhere from 1500 - 1800 calories daily (or trying to, but mostly overeating it) and losing weight (if at all) only because I was working out as much as possible.

Since the paleo diet is heavily based in meat and fat instead of carbs (and veggies have low carbs but very very few calories) I'm coming up across an issue that I have a hard time dealing with.

My calorie count is going to be tremendous with all this fat, but I won't be eating that much food.

Because I'm attempting to lose weight, I don't plan on eating starchy veg at all, so no potatoes, beans, peanuts, sugars - and I'm sort of borderline unsure what to do about dairy (such as cream, etc). Aiming for under 50g carbs, but there's no guidelines anywhere for calories (and since most diet websites assume you're getting a lot of grains, etc, I feel that the "recommended calories" on there are not going to be correct with the amount of fat that I'm eating)

I've been doing almond milk / protien powder for breakfast this week but I'm planning on eating eggs & avocado for breakfast and adding coconut oil in there more often. Sardines or chicken & veggies for lunch, most likely some form of meat for dinner (lamb, chicken, pork, beef roast). But I'm already topping 1500 calories... I can't fathom I'd LOSE WEIGHT eating 2000+ calories daily.

Suggestions? Solutions for this mental block? Help?

as I posted over on your other question - you are so wrapped up in calorie and fat counting. I weigh 5 lbs more than you right now - Have lost almost 30 lbs since mid-jan and have not once counted up calories in my day or fat %'s. My suggestion is to do whole9 30 day stay away from scale and avoid adding up calories and % for 30 days and see if you can get away from the fixation. Eat clean and only when your hungry. Chill. Breathe. Enjoy. – OSUfanz Mar 23 2011 at 16:47
OSUfanz - I'm wrapped up because I'm desperate and I have no time to exercise - calorie restriction thus far has only made me ridiculously hungry and anxious and ugh.. My brain refuses to accept that I could eat straight up butter every meal and not turn into a blob, its not possible. – Oranges13 Mar 23 2011 at 17:44

Have you read ANY of the Paleo books? I think it would possibly help with your anxiety over the fat/calorie issues. My favorite is Robb Wolf's THE PALEO SOLUTION, but Mark Sisson's PRIMAL BLUEPRINT is also a really easy read. I also think you would get a lot of value from reading Taubes WHY WE GET FAT. I don't agree with everything he says, but the science makes sense. I know you don't have a lot of free time, but I really think it would help you out. – sherpamelissa Mar 23 2011 at 17:50

Do you have 10 minutes a few times a week? That amount of exercise would be better than none, and you can get a decent workout if you really bring the intensity for 10 minutes. – Brad Mar 23 2011 at 19:28

Someone who is 198 pounds does not need exercise to lose weight. Exercise will be a healthy life practice, when it starts to feel good, but diet is all that's really going to matter for quite some time. – Ambimorph Mar 23 2011 at 21:06

Some people can lose weight on 2000 calories a day, some can't. I'm not sure why you feel like your calories need to be that high?

I eat roughly 1200/1500 calories per day with 50% of my calories from fat 25/30% from protein and 15/20% from carbs. I try to keep my carbs around 75 grams and honestly, the rest just kind of falls in to place.

Upping my fat and calories was a bit of a mental block for me when I moved from losing weight to maintaining weight. I just tracked everything and took it slowly. I went from 1200 calories to 1300 for a month and lost just a little bit more weight so I raised it to 1400/1500 and stayed pretty steady. I just slowly transitioned carbs choices to fat choices as I worked on my calories and ratios.

It doesn't need to be FAST. Take it slow, track what you are doing so you know what is working and not working. Don't try a bunch of different protocols at once.

+1 Patience is key. I think it can be hard, esp when we (paleo peeps) see all of these genetic phenomes on MDA, and other sites, who lose weight and get ripped in 4 weeks. – Ben Mar 23 2011 at 16:07

exactly, you can't find a baseline if you don't count all this stuff, so you need to for a while at least. – PKN Mar 23 2011 at 16:59
No that's the thing - I don't want my calories to be that high. But these foods are inheritly high in fat, which means they're high in calories. Even if I eat a reasonable portion of protien rich foods and limit carbs to basic vegetables, I'm butting up against or breaking my comfort zone. Especially if I drink straight up cream and eat coconut oil like people are suggesting on other forums. I'm freaking out because MY BRAIN WON'T FATHOM EATING 2000+ CALORIES AND LOSING WEIGHT BECAUSE ITS NOT POSSIBLE. – Oranges13 Mar 23 2011 at 17:28

It is possible for some people, but it doesn't mean you HAVE to do it to be Paleo and lose weight. SLOW DOWN. MAKE SMALL CHANGES, GET COMFORTABLE WITH THEM, MAKE MORE SMALL CHANGES. You do not need to eat straight up cream and coconut oil. EAT REAL WHOLE FOODS, do not eat gluten/sugar/vegetable oil, try to eat grassfed/pastured meat and fish. – sherpamelissa Mar 23 2011 at 17:43

I know the standard Paleo practice is to not count calories, and I certainly don't, but I think some people go too far with that.

I eat 2-3 meals/day, often with a couple tablespoons of coconut oil late in the evening. My basic rule is to eat if I'm hungry, don't eat when I'm not. There are days I eat a lot and days I eat very little.

Even on the days I eat a lot, though, I am still conscience of the calories I eat even though I don't count them. I've gotten use to not "topping off the tank," of not eating until I'm stuffed. I've learned that there is nothing wrong with being a wee bit hungry for part of my day. If I took "eat as much as you want" literally I would not lose weight. I'm especially conscience of liquid calories (i.e. - a bit of heavy cream now and then) as my body doesn't seem to recognize them much.

Eating Paleo makes me much more sated than the SAD used to; I largely eat what I want but without being stupid about it.

"My basic rule is to eat if I'm hungry, don't eat when I'm not." Yes. – Ambimorph Mar 23 2011 at 16:27
Yesterday my experience was that I didn't have enough calories. I got up to about 1500 and if it wasn't for the SERIOUSLY FATTY corned beef I had for dinner I wouldn't have even gotten close to that. The greens & chicken I had for lunch kept me so ridiculously full. – Oranges13 Mar 23 2011 at 17:40

My experience, really simplified: I could eat at 1500-1800 calories a day, eat mostly carbs and yep, I'd gain weight. I could eat up to 2500-2900 calories of fat, meat, and vegetables, though, and lose weight. Not my exact experience because I don't always track, but based on when I have tracked, it goes something like that.

And no, it doesn't violate any laws of thermodynamics. Number one, I'm not a closed system. Number two, I'm not a bomb calorimeter.

Number three, fat loss (not just weight loss) is hormonally driven. Insulin's a hormone. If you keep it elevated all the time, you won't lose much fat. If you eat in a way that allows your insulin levels to fluctuate in a healthy way, you do lose fat.

sherpamelissa's got a good point. Try changing one thing at a time and see how it plays out in your body. Self-experimentation can be fun and it'll probably shock your body a lot less.

But I think you'll find that with carbs dropped far enough and fat going high enough, you'll be able to attain satiety and the pounds will still drop off. The really fun part will be when you realize you can exercise for fun and don't have to be on the treadmill 5 hours a day--and the weight's still coming off.

I have lost 18 lbs since January 1st with eating paleo and doing Crossfit between 3-5 times per week. I don't count calories but I focus mainly on eating a protein and veggie combination with every meal. I usually eat 3 meals and 2 snacks a day and I still allow myself a cheat day on Saturday, which actually means I eat 2 meals of whatever I want and keep my breakfast routine of eggs and a protein. It really seems to be working for me...I hope you have as much success.

Unfortunately I don't have time to do something as intense as Crossfit - best I can do is ride my stationary bike or go walking and improve my running. Even then, its only going to be 3 times a week IF I'M LUCKY. – Oranges13 Mar 23 2011 at 17:39

If you have time to do the bike/walk/run then you have time to try a HIIT program. You can do body weight exercises like squats/lunges/burpees/pushups without any equipment. These types of exercises can really make a huge difference even in small amounts. I know you are used to doing cardio to lose weight, but you don't have to! I was a cardio junkie 4/6 days a week of an hour plus. Now I do HIIT 3 days a week for 20 minutes and I have both lost weight and now maintain a weight loss with this protocol. – sherpamelissa Mar 23 2011 at 17:57

I'm feeling a bit like a broken record, and hope no one is getting too tired of hearing this, but my view is that you don't need to purposely limit calories on low carb. I have lost over 40 lbs by eating unlimited quantities of fatty meat. True enough, right now I'm barely losing, and I'm still about 10 lbs above my ideal. But I'm eating 3000 calories a day as a 5'6 female at about 135 lbs.

I feel like everyone must know my protocol too! You are my Zero Carb Queen as you know. I feel like I am the CRAZY CALORIE COUNTING LADY. LOL. It's kind of why I pointed out that everyone is different. I think it's awesome that you found what works for you! – sherpamelissa Mar 23 2011 at 17:03
If I were eating 3000 calories I think I would have so much anxiety I would explode. That's not possible. – Oranges13 Mar 23 2011 at 17:30
Heheh, @sherpamelissa. Who knows, I may need to count to make further progress. I'm still investigating. – Ambimorph Mar 23 2011 at 20:52

Mark, I think the word you want is finite, not discrete, and I find the accusation ridiculous. Do you think I mean infinite when I say unlimited? I mean I eat as much as I desire. I have detailed my lifestyle in other places on this site, for example here in the comments: paleohacks.com/questions/25743/…. My actively level varies from light to moderate. – Ambimorph May 4 2012 at 19:23

Mark, it might be just as unhelpful to tell newbies in an unqualified way that eating fat ad libitum will make you fat. For some people that simply isn't true, and in fact if they try to limit calories and fat they will not lose weight. I've seen it time and time again (just as I've seen time and time again that some people need to limit both calories and fat). We should all relate our experiences in an epistemologically modest way. I think that will help the most. – Paul May 4 2012 at 20:52

I measure calories because its fun for me (I like numbers)... but I don't really count or restrict calories in the typical way. I think thats okay for you to continue doing if having some numbers makes you feel better about what you're doing.

To your point, I find myself eating fewer calories on Paleo than I did with my SAD before. Yet I am always satisfied. I was far hungrier/less satisfied on the SAD.

I have a history of disordered eating, and "eating til satisfied" is not something my body recognizes really. So I try to balance food logging on fitday.com and eating intuitively. It is not easy to eat without strict guidelines, I will binge and freak-out. I'm still healing that mentally. So I have my own guidelines with ranges so I don't feel too regimented. I eat between 75-100g of fat, 30-65g of carbs from veg and some fruit, and 100-125g of protein. This is 1200-1600 calories, and I'm usually at the high-end of it.

I have about 60lbs to lose and am losing 1-2 pounds per week. I walk 2-4 times a week for about 40 minutes on my lunchbreak. I do squats and modified push-ups and planks 1-2 times a week at home in front of the teevee. I take a water aerobics class once a week.

I think you should be open to finding what works for you. It's great to have other people's advice and experience, but ultimately your body is unique and your mental blocks are unique and you're going to have to experiment to find the right system for you.

I am just like you SJ. I count on the counting to keep me honest because intuitive and "eating til full" just doesn't work for me. – sherpamelissa Mar 23 2011 at 18:48

i really think you should spend some time reading about exactly what the paleo diet is before you attempt it for a significant fat loss.

why we get fat by gary taubes primal blueprint by mark sisson paleo solution by robb wolf.

read marksdailyapple blog, and especially start at his primal 101 section. read robb wolfs blog, and especially the FAQ section. eat meat, fat, eggs and vegetables. before you put anything in your mouth, ask yourself if someone would have had access to it ten thousand years ago. dont think about fat, carbs or protein at first. just STOP EATING SUGAR AND GRAINS AND VEGETABLE OILS. dont eat anything with an ingredients list. its really very, very simple but it sounds like you should really familiarize yourself with the basic principles behind the diet and lifestyle before you do it.

As many have said, different things work for different people. The only way I have successfully lost weight is through counting calories. If I don't write down what I eat, then I have a bad tendency to assume that an extra handful of almonds doesn't matter...even if it happens several times a day. Once I see that those almonds add up quickly, I find myself less likely to snack. It's that snacking impulse that gets me, whether I'm eating a relatively high-carb vegetarian diet (which I did for a long time) or a low-carb paleocentric diet.

I use mynetdiary.com, and I highly recommend it. I've used it for 5 months and gone from 170# to 135#. You put in your current weight, your goal weight, and the time by which you want to achieve that goal, and it will tell you how many calories you need to eat. You enter your exercise (however much you get), and that allows you to monitor whether you can exceed your recommended food intake for the day.

Although it seems to be true that hormones have a big influence over weight loss, I still believe the calories in - calories out approach has merit. Many people argue that they feel so full on a paleo diet that they naturally regulate the calories in part, but you may not be one of those people. I know my impulse to snack is not hunger-driven, so no amount of fat or protein will save me if I don't keep myself accountable for the total calories.

Good luck with your weight loss goals - I know what a challenge it can be.

I'm the same way... around 3pm today at work I had to fight hard not to eat another apple or another squeeze pack of almond butter. I wans't hungry - it was totally a mental tick – Oranges13 Mar 24 2011 at 1:12
IME, almonds matter -- but not because of calories. Nuts make me gain when an equivalent amount of animal fat would not. Also, I can't have a handful once a day. A handful once makes me crave more of them (and other things) for hours or even days afterward. – Ambimorph Mar 25 2011 at 18:30
It's not a mental tick, it's that those foods are addictive. – Ambimorph Mar 25 2011 at 18:31

Here is a starting point. Take a look at this list, and try implementing these things into your eating, one or two at a time:

Your calorie count I think you find will actually not be "that" tremendous. When you cut down on all the junk and lower your carbs I think you may find that it is true you will eat less. At first your calories may be higher and it seems as if the fat is way too high..but give it time to adjust. If you remain hi fat/low carb with higher calories you will switch to fat burning. The important part is LOW carb..if the carbs are not low enough you will not switch to fat burning. That is why eat fat when you are hungry- but do not eat more carbs. Right now I am at about 7% carbs, 80% fat and 13 protein -either cn go up or don a bit but I try to keep carbs at under 10%. Does it hurt me to know this?? Of course not!!it helps me to know what I can eat through the day to stay at these levels. It is totally silly for anyone to say do not look at amounts. ONCE you are comfortable you will not need to. Starting out..go ahead..better than giving up because it feels too confusing.

I compared my daily "previous SCD" with hi fat and the hi fat is a good 1000 1200 fewer calories per day.

That being said even if it is higher do not sweat it esp right away.

I use My Fat Secretand I do track/record amounts periodically. Some of us DO need to use a tool like this to help establish a plan. Yes that sounds like what it is NOT supposed to be..but just as "if you need more carbs-eat them-eat fruit-etc.." if you need to track/record..DO IT!! I somehow doubt that many of the "purists" who are anti tracking are so totally pure in the actual way of eating..who cares..it is YOUR life..do what works for you!! there are many low carb/hi fat/paleo ppl on these diet tracking sites that will discuss the ups and downs.

i know i'm late to the game here oranges, but i have followed your posts on ph long before i was a member. forgive me if this is offbase, but they have always alarmed me a bit. like melissa and sj, i come from a disordered background and the things that you post always remind me of the things i said/thought at my worst. have you been to the doctor any time recently, or a psychologist? as much as i hate to say it, i think getting off ph and stopping the obsession with nutrition hacks and weight and counting would definitely behoove you. i have found those who are obsessed with losing weight, "being blobs," and having anxiety over what they eat usually have other, bigger life issues going on that cause major stress/anxiety/fear and they would be better suited addressing the bigger problems first, and food falls into place after that.

good luck! we are all rooting for you here.

This is certainly all rather uncomplicated and it actually does work if you can make certain you count the calories which you eat and don't deceive simply because don't forget you're mainly cheating you! If you would like to know the response to the query 'just how many calories should you have a day' then take a look at this next part.

If we made distinct, if you wish to understand the solution to 'how many calories must I shed extra pounds?' you might be purely making use of previously mentioned calculations and setting yourself a reduced standard of calories on a daily basis that you simply should never exceed. If you wish to understand more info on the calories located in numerous typical foods and drinks then remember to take a peek within the other web pages on our blog.

Keep in mind that our what number of calories do I need to have a day to drop some weight calculator is the most effective way to see the quantity of calories you must be ingesting and in the event that you do have a very few exact specifications on yourself and a calculator you are about to have zero complications in keeping up with weight or reducing your weight when you need it by changing the calories you try to eat.
