My girlfriend and I both changed our diet and eliminated all the carbs and sugars a couple of weeks ago.

In the last week, both of us have found that everything(with some exceptions) has a bitter taste and/or aftertaste. Meat, vegetables, Fruits...

Exceptions to this are nuts and fat. Neither of those have a bitter taste or aftertaste. In fact, fat seems to cut the bitter taste/aftertaste on other things(if its sufficiently fatty).

Any ideas what this is?

Have you eaten pine nuts recently?

Ha! Wow. Even if pine nuts are not applicable here in James' case, that is a very appropriate answer Cynarin. I had no idea pine nuts could have that effect. They are so tasty too. Thanks for the link. – Jack Kronk Mar 23 2011 at 16:23
I had some about 2 weeks ago, but was fine for a week after. I bought some more recently, but haven't eaten any yet – James Mar 23 2011 at 16:23

That was my first thought too! – sherpamelissa Mar 23 2011 at 17:07

My first thought too. It's a delayed reaction, so the bitter taste showing up a week after you ate them sounds about right. – Gazelle Mar 23 2011 at 19:18
yeah, this pine nut thing just happened to a co worker of mine, it went on for quite a while for her. – tartare Jun 12 2011 at 0:09

Are you in ketosis? It is possible that the bad taste and bad breath are affecting your tastebuds.

Walnuts can also do the same thing. Or any other food with tannic acid.

I have a similar issue. I've been Paleo for exactly a week now, and today I decided to cheat a bit with some red wine and dark chocolate. The wine tasted very strange (it was a brand I know) and the chocolate tasted really metallic. I haven't had pine nuts, but I do eat 7-8 walnut halves every day. Maybe it is the ketosis.

Yeah, totally ketosis. Does everything smell like ammonia, too?

This is totally bizarre. I ate a ton of pine nuts one day last week and I too am suffering from a strange inexplicable bitter taste in my mouth.

I had never eaten pine nuts before going paleo. Now everything tastes bitter in the back of my mouth. Mystery solved. No more pine nuts.
