I removed the incorrect anthropology to make this a valid question. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Mar 23 2011 at 20:37

Considering men and women have genetically different body compositions, hormone cycles and reproductive demands, I think its likely that the optimal diet is a little different, but I don't know how. Most women I know eat insane amounts of sugar, much more than the average SAD eating man I know. I know a few of my friends who "improve" their husbands meat based fast food diets with lots of fruit and whole grains. Maybe there's a biological reason why women seem to crave more carbohydrates and men more protein. I know when I added some starchy vegetables back in my diet and quit counting carbs, my mood and energy improved a great deal.

Agreed on all points Heather. I too feel far better with moderate amounts of starch. – animalcule Mar 24 2011 at 1:18

Your argument is based on a false premise: "Women gather, men hunt?".

We may very well have different requirements, but it is not good anthropology you got there.

yeah, and men often share their kills anyway. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Mar 23 2011 at 20:41
nice link, well written Melissa, similar to Desmond Morris: youtube.com/watch?v=ZMjpN2YGjKE – oliverh Mar 23 2011 at 20:56

In my personal experience? Men lose weight with much less effort than women - my boyfriend and I are both doing the paleo thing. I have no delusions that he'll lose 2x the weight as me - but that's a good thing since he's got 2x the weight to lose.

there are differences with a biological origin, plus sometimes other differences originating in different roles for men and women. Biology prepares the female body to be able to bring new life into this world: that requires extra caloric reserves since first the fetus then the baby has to grow, fed by the mother. And so the mother has to feed accordingly, and may crave for more calories. Also men and women usually place themselves at different work positions and traditionally most of the jobs that require more strength such as mechanic, firefighter or miner have been performed by men, which is another explanation for the differences in nutritional requirements.

Often women have to be more strict with low carb to lose weight than men. – Philosopher Mar 24 2011 at 0:09
