BF and I just started on paleo and I'd like to vary what we're eating up a bit. Unfortunately I think our meat will mostly be sourced from the super market. We have some farms around us but they only butcher in the late spring (May) and fall (October) and for lack of a deep freeze, we can't keep meat around that long in huge quantities.

We're going to check the local "organic" stores to see if they carry meat but I don't have any high hopes. Once the farmers market starts up in May we'll have better luck.

Anyway - being of scottish heritage, I've had kidneys and offal meat before. Weird tasting, but I know its good for you; two questions:

1) Will buying supermarket offal be bad for us? I've seen buckets of chicken livers and I could probably go up to the meat counter and ask the butcher for beef hearts or livers - but do I want to eat factory raised liver?! EW!

2) I know that coconut milk is (supposedly) supposed to be a great meat tenderizer. Not the biggest fan of the offal flavor - kidneys especially - do you think smothering it in coconut and spices would be good? Spicy offal? :)

Been wondering about the supermarket beef liver myself as well, if eating it raw is okay....especially after reading this I am wanting to try these home-made "liver pills" LOL! inthenightlife.wordpress.com/author/sophiakate – texasleah Mar 24 2011 at 20:16

I think the micronutrient density is simply too valuable to avoid. Grass-fed is better, but no organs would likely result in poorer health.

probably true travis. tropical traditions sells a 6 pack of fully grass fed beef livers just incase nothing like that is available to anyone where they live. it's like $35 or something. – Jack Kronk Mar 25 2011 at 20:32

If you have a wife, slip some organ meat into her chili. If you are a wife, slip some into your own chili. Everybody's doing it.

I generally get NZ lamb liver/heart. You pretty much know it's grassfed if it's from New Zealand. Yum yum yum yum. Infact I'm having some lambs liver tonight with bacon, caramalised onions and sweet potato fries oh yes.

Where do you buy this out of curiosity? I know our local Sam's club has nice grass-fed lamb roasts, but I don't think I've ever seen the offal. – Oranges13 Mar 25 2011 at 17:30
I live in England so Tescos. You can get in in nearly any supermarket over here. – Carly Mar 25 2011 at 17:34

Possible concers for me: - Antibiotics (check the blog post above) - Hormones (check the blog post above) - Too much Omega6 (depends on the type of meat, pork liver has like 4g of total fat so not a factor there)

Do you have a whole foods in your area? They have grass fed liver every once and a while.

Here is a link for Beef Tallow Shortening:

and at the same site their grass-fed Liver:

and a link for their liverwurst:

Liver is so full of vitamins and minerals you only need to eat it once a week and not more than twice a week.

I would not eat factory farmed organ meat.

If there was a Whole Foods I'd go there ^_^ (used to have one in Orlando, but I moved to Michigan - only one up here is in Detroit and I'm on the other side of the state) – Oranges13 Mar 25 2011 at 13:22
