I have a nickel sized bruise on both my upper left and right arms. i have no idea what caused them. i remember years ago when i was on the zone diet i started to bruise easily after 4 months. this is my 8th month of paleo and this is starting. last sunday i worked out hard- could it have been related to that?

If you bruise easily, it may be that your subcutaneous fat layer is too thin (this should not be confused with internal fat around the organs - many overweight people have very 'thin' skin). If you are on the paleo diet and eating plenty of good quality saturated fat, then your skin's fat layers should be repairing themselves gradually. It takes time. When I was a vegetarian I would bruise frequently and deeply, (I had my subcutaneous fat layer measured by a doctor and it was very thin) but after about a year into eating lots of saturated fat I stopped bruising so badly and would not feel so cold. Of course, I still have a knock now and then, but the bruising tends to be smaller and lighter. Every month I go through a 'clumsy phase' and bump into things more often than usual - the edge of beds, car doors etc. Perhaps you could keep an eye on when you are bruising and see if it happens in a rhythm which coincides with your monthly cycle. I am convinced it is to do with the phases of the moon.....but then again, I am sure there is a more rational explanation...... Another old wives' tale says that if you have suddenly become more clumsy.....you are pregnant ;) |

Do you supplement with vitamin D and K? K is responsible for blood clotting. I was bruising easily until I started taking K. Use the gels or drops. They are fat soluble so it makes more sense to get them delivered through fat. |

I got these when I was paleo-pescatarian. Excess omega-3 can cause this. Are you taking fish oil? It's one of the most common side effects. |

I also bruise much easier on Paleo. Im also taking vitamin K and D3 and high dose fish oil. I can bruise just by pinching my love handles. I doubt its the fat loss as Ive only dropped 6 pounds and I wasnt that big to begin with. I used to never bruise and it would take a really hard hit to make one show up. Update: I no longer am easy to bruise. I don't know why the change but I'm back to how I originally was, difficult to bruise. Still eat Paleo for all meals, only cheat is dark chocolate, Greek yogurt or sometimes frozen yogurt. |
