I got myself 100% coconut cream from Renuka.

I ate it pure, about 30g and now I feel sickness in my stomach, so I'm wondering, how do you eat it ?

I use a lot in my coffee, I also use it with a couple of eggs for a wonderful post workout protein shake and I also just drink it usually a can a day or so. I also use a lot of expeller pressed virgin coconut oil to cook with or just eat off the spoon. – Alan Apr 30 2010 at 11:24

The sickness you feel could be because you are not used to eating coconut products, and 30g of concentrated coconut can be a lot if it's the first time you've tried it. A similar thing happened to me the first time I had coconut milk (half a can in one go), but it hasn't happened again since. A more unlikely possibility is that you're allergic or intolerant. Try having small amounts of more diluted coconut products every day and build up to larger amounts, hopefully the sickness should disappear.

Do you mean:

a) "coconut cream" (like coconut milk but thicker, yet still liquid at room temperature), or

b) "creamed coconut" (solid at room temperature, in the form of a hard white block that melts when heated)?

They're quite similar anyway, just that coconut cream has more water and therefore lower fat % by weight and is liquid at room temp. I would use coconut cream much like coconut milk, i.e. in sauces, curries, smoothies, or just drink it straight by itself (go easy in the beginning!) or with a little added cinnamon, nuts, berries or whatever you fancy.

Creamed coconut: eat chunks of it as is, or else grate into curries and sauces (will be like using coconut milk but you need less amount as it's more concentrated).

The best way, though, (for my taste) to eat these coconut products is combined with dark chocolate. You can make an absolutely yummy chocolatey pudding by just mixing coconut cream or melted creamed coconut with melted dark chocolate or cocoa powder. If you use creamed coconut you'll get a sort of fudgey consistency (amazingly good) after chilling. With coconut cream it'll be more like a mousse.

Basic "coco-choco" recipe using creamed coconut:

  1. Cut the desired amount from a block of creamed coconut and break it into small chunks.

  2. Melt the chunks over a water bath until they turn into a smooth puré. Add the chocolate, either dark chocolate squares (two or three is plenty) or a couple of tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder. If using solid chocolate, allow it to melt with the coconut in the water bath.

  3. Mix. Add a bit of water if the consistency seems to thick (this really depends on personal preference, just bear in mind it will thicken when chilled). Add flavouring if you like (cinnamon, vanilla, etc.).

  4. Cool until it reaches desired consistency - freezer (about 15min) or fridge (an hour or two).

  5. Enjoy!

Diarrhoea from excess fat consumption is called Steatorrhea. It usually occurs when you increase your fat intake suddenly but there can be other causes like liver damage, hypolipidemic drugs, or having had the gallbladder removed. Normally tho it just means you need to dial back your fat intake for a while, increase it slowly as you accustomize to it and you'll be fine. Malabsorption of fat is the inability to digest or absorb fat. Fat malabsorption may occur because of reduced pancreatic secretions that are necessary for normal digestion of fat (for example, due to pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer) or by diseases of the lining of the small intestine that prevent the absorption of digested fat (for example, celiac disease). Undigested fat enters the last part of the small intestine and colon where bacteria turn it into substances (chemicals) that cause water to be secreted by the small intestine and colon. Passage through the small intestine and colon also may be more rapid when there is malabsorption of fat. Hope this helps.

I will assume the coconut cream is mostly coconut oil with a bit of coconut milk. People who consume coconut oil for health benefits are advised to start with small amounts for two reasons: one is that consuming a lot of fat can be nauseating or diarrhea-promoting when you aren't used to it. Secondly, some believe that the anti-fungal/anti-microbial properties of coconut cause "die-off" of pathogens, making the person feel ill.

So the advice is to start with a small amount and increase as tolerated.

Hi, I ordered some renuka creamed coconut as well and had severe stomach pain after eating a few small pieces. Have you tried any other coconut products in the meantime? Could it be just this product causing our problems, or do you also have issues with coconut oil etc?
