I wanted to do a cleanse as i was constantly constipated. I decided to take wormwood for 2 weeks and it made me very regular and also made my stool look much more normal, both in color and consistency (before the anti-fungal it was sometimes a bit on the softer side and color was not always normal which is brownish i suppose). After the anti-fungal 5 days ago, i started taking probiotics and i was regular for the first 2 to 3 days. Now I'm having some constipation and my stool is coming out green/pale and very thin and i'm very gassy.

Anybody had any similar experience from this combination or from probiotics alone?

Is this reaction normal? If so, what could be causing it?

P.S: Sorry for being so graphical :)

UPDATE: Turns out, the weird reaction is normal when you start taking probiotics. All is fine now.

I just started a probiotic Sunday. Been gassy all week, and I was wondering why. Now, I might have an idea :) – Todd Mar 31 2011 at 22:20
You may also notice some weird gurgling noises. Took around 7 days to clear up for me. Btw, one huge improvement i noticed was super clear and shiny skin and thicker hair! – Flavio M. Mar 31 2011 at 22:40
I assume i didn't have a good enough gut flora and wasn't absorbing nutrients properly. – Flavio M. Mar 31 2011 at 22:42

it is probably that your gut flora is out of balance , I had similar happen to me and I took double doses of probiotic and ate plenty of fermented vegetables and it cleared up in no time

Wormwood is a very powerful herb. Two weeks is a long time to use wormwood. You may have upset your balance of yeast and bacteria by using it for so long. I am not an expert, but I practice herbalism as a hobby. I do not generally think a cleanse is a good idea, it will not fix a problem like constipation if you go back to your exact same diet after.

Your reaction may even be caused by something else entirely, what were you eating before your problem? What is your typical diet?

I was eating a typical paleo diet with some dairy. Now i'm eating no dairy, except for butter. I was pretty regular after starting with wormwood, but once i stopped and introduced the probiotics the constipation+weird stools began. Maybe i should stay on the probiotics for at least 2 weeks to see what happens? – Flavio M. Mar 26 2011 at 16:11
I read that probiotics can cause some initial strange reactions so maybe i should just wait and see if it returns to normal? – Flavio M. Mar 26 2011 at 16:14
Yes, in the long run the probiotics are good and shouldn't cause too many problems. I would keep taking them. Sweet potatoes are a good food for regularity and bowel function. – Hannah Mar 26 2011 at 22:21
what do you think of oregano oil, hannah? – rodger Mar 15 2012 at 11:48

You wiped out the balance in your intestines. The probiotics are gulping down like mad everything left when the other stuff died. It should go back in balance once the extra goodies are gone and the extra bacteria die off.

probiotics with FOS can tend to make you SUPER gassy, and it might never be alleviated, if you are sensitive to FOS's watch out!

After a colonoscopy, my dr. recommended Align and MiraLax. I'd been constipated with bloating for a year. After 5 weeks of Align, my stool is sometimes green. I'm glad I found some answers here. I'm not much of a cook, so eating well is an issue. When I miss taking the MiraLax, I go right back to constipation.

There is no weird poop, there is only poop that you have not managed to accept.

Open your heart to your poop, be tolerant of your poop, celebrate its diversity, only then can you achieve Poop Nirvana.
