I really dig this site and I am loving life on Paleo. I am 95% compliant [rarely 'cheating' {though I could find a better word} on pizza or naan] and have enjoyed the weight loss and muscle gains. I don't feel great about posting another "is this specific food ok in your opinions" thread because I don't feel it adds as much as more open-ended questions. But in searching I couldn't find a thread that covered greens blends in smoothies. I love this site and the information and opinions offered here. Y'all do much to encourage and support this lifestyle change and I am grateful for the input of everyone here!

I have been obese most of my life and am making drastic changes to my diet and lifestyle in order to change that. Three times a week I do very intense workouts. I am very tall [6'6"] and therefore am 'supposed' to eat a good deal of protein in order to grow my muscles. I find it hard to eat all of this from meat, so for the time being I am using whey protein to supplement.

I know for some that's not very paleo but I just can't force down enough meat to make my daily minimum happen.

I frequently enjoy pre and post workout smoothies, and I often like to throw in a scoop or two of this Amazing Grass brand chocolate 'superfood' in there. It doesn't seem too terrible from a Paleo standpoint, and it really improves the flavor of the smoothie.

I just put Coconut milk, ice, chocolate greens blend and Jarrows 100% Whey Protein [no fillers or additives].

Is this something that could potentially curb my fat loss? Sometimes a smoothie is the only way I can get my early morning protein [having read somewhere that protein within 30 minutes makes a big difference in encouraging weight loss].

So, what say you fellow hackers? Are greens blends kosher for paleos?

I eat 99% chocolate daily now for cardiac effects......this stuff has plant grains so could not advocate it for my patients – The Quilt Mar 27 2011 at 17:13
It's not grains per say but grass that has been juiced and then dehydrated. The usual suspect that make grains so nasty shouldn't be present. Most green juice mixes are certified gluten free. – No more. Mar 27 2011 at 18:50

Have you tried using just some spinach and cocoa added to your smoothie, instead of this commercial product? The spinach flavor just disappears when cocoa is in the mix. Other mild greens would work too. You would save a ton of money too.

You think I would save money using raw cocoa nibs and spinach over this mix? I am not so sure... – RicoPags Mar 29 2011 at 13:42

Alfalfa, wheat, barley... No

Did you read the ingredients? Those aren't the grains thereof, they are grown grasses. – RicoPags Mar 29 2011 at 5:50

It does not seem to, although from what I recall Dutch cocoa basically has all the beneficial parts of chocolate stripped out to remove bitterness (it would probably not taste so great if this was not done). With the number of ingredients it could easily be that they are in such small quantities that they do nothing as well. (Kind of like how homeopathy is just a waste of money instead of being dangerous by mass dilution).

Adding chocolate to a smoothie is not a bad idea, but you might be better off adding real bitter chocolate if the bitterness is not bad. You can always eat the broccoli/carrots etc on their own.

I'd also note that anything that says "superfood" makes me think scam. Especially since this is a concoction and not a whole food. Inclusion of acai is especially has bad connotations, as that was the worst scam-food product byline to come around in awhile.

I agree re: homeopathy, but this isn't homeopathy. Note the levels of K and Vit B12. Totally agree re: "superfood" but you gotta market yourself somehow, right? ;] – RicoPags Mar 29 2011 at 5:51

Eggs are a great source of protein, and are delicious if cooked up in some animal fat. Hard boiled eggs also make great snacks, too. Do you eat eggs often?

I almost eat too many eggs. I love eggs. Smoothies are for when I am not at all hungry enough to eat anything. – RicoPags Mar 29 2011 at 5:49
