GMO Fruits, Veggies and ...yes Salmon...lately it hit that since I've haven't been eating Grains, Dairy and Legumes, that I'm basically eating genetically modified garbage...

Ever feel like you've left one evil for another.

Fructose, wheat, linoleic acid - now that's scary! Beans and dairy, not so scary. – Dave S. Mar 28 2011 at 16:51

As a farmer, I'd like to weigh in here. I'm not aware of any commercially available GMO fruits or vegetables apart from sweet corn and papayas. There was a GMO tomato years ago, but it was discontinued due to poor consumer acceptance. There are thousands of new varieties of fruit and vegetables released every year, but those are developed by traditional breeding (yeah good ol plant on plant action, hot!). Of course I'm sure there are plenty of GMOs vegetables lurking in labs around the world waiting to be released.

Let me know if I missed any other GMO fruit or Vegetables.

As far as I know you are correct. – Matt Mar 28 2011 at 18:05
Hmm, perhaps I am misinformed, in that I assumed that most of the grocery store fare was GMO or somehow tainted with chemicals. What about restaurants where you know they want to use the cheapest stuff available. Perhaps you could inform me on which channels use GMO fruits/veggies. – Tim Mar 28 2011 at 18:30
Maybe you mean pesticides, Tim ? – Ikco Mar 28 2011 at 18:36
There are not any GMO fruit and vegetables for sale, apart from papayas grown in Hawaii. – Matt Mar 28 2011 at 18:39
Plant on Plant action - that made me laugh! My favorite apple is a result of just such a union. Honeycrisp may have been made by man but it was sent by god :) – Oranges13 Mar 28 2011 at 19:31

No, I don't feel like I've left one evil for the other.

Even eating CAFO meat and unpastured chickens and non-organic fruits/vegetables, I am doing so much better than when I ate all of the processed gluten filled, sugar laden crap.

I do my best to source things the best I can, but when I can't I don't stress about it.

grow what you can, and otherwise buy local from people you trust

I'm not eating GMO anything but grains scare me a hell of a lot more than pasteurized dairy of CAFO meat. CAFO meat = ever so small a pimple the next day, maybe a subtle grumble in the tummy right after. Pasteurized dairy - worse but won't ruin my day. Grains - fuck, I'm being eaten alive from the inside! Ahhhh! Even sprouted quinoa and white rice are unpleasant.

I think it's all about finding a responsible source and never, ever leaving it. I find that I'm eating more local foods since those are the ones I can trust. I think Salmon is by far the scariest one. I'm worried about a GMO salmon somehow escaping into the wild and contaminating the other fish.

Even beyond GMO Salmon....we have the gulf of mexico which is basically poisoned from the Oil Spill/Cleanup and then the pacific is getting radiation from Japan – Tim Mar 28 2011 at 14:34
They already have escaped. Check out the work by Alexandra Morton - alexandramorton.typepad.com So sad. BUY WILD!!! Support the fisherman – Thumper Mar 28 2011 at 14:37

I was just about to post that I have been buying Pacific or Alaskan Salmon as much as possible recently, but then I realized I haven't since the Tsunami in Japan. Does anyone know if it has affected Pacific Salmon production? – StalkingMySupper Mar 28 2011 at 15:02
I this would make a good question to post. – texasleah Mar 28 2011 at 15:37

I'm just waiting for our farmers market to open in may. Literally counting the days. Until then, we don't really have an option for grass-fed anything. Having to make due with the fewest ingredient things we can find in the store. Last night we spent 20 minutes reading labels to find a sausage that was low carb and had as few unpronounceable ingredients as possible. No luck finding nitrate free bacon yet :(

I use the Applegate Farms brand of bacon for nitrate-free. applegatefarms.com/resources For sausage your best bet is an old-school butcher shop. – StalkingMySupper Mar 28 2011 at 14:24
Be careful with "Farmer's Markets" there is a Dutch Country Farmer's Market nearby...why I asked them where they get their chicken from , they...we don't know...I was shocked.. – Tim Mar 28 2011 at 14:37
@Tim - this is an honest to goodness farmers market, lots of different vendors and farmers will be there. It isn't a store front. @StalkingmySupper - I don't believe we have that brand (looked at all the bacon last night, no luck) nor do we have a "butcher" – Oranges13 Mar 28 2011 at 14:49
Bummer :( There are sources online if you're desperate... – StalkingMySupper Mar 28 2011 at 15:07

You do realise that nitrate free bacon contains just as much nitrates as normal bacon? – Matt Mar 28 2011 at 18:23

No, I'm in the boonies. Ah I wish we had a publix up here, but they are a southern company and I'm in BFE Michigan. – Oranges13 Mar 28 2011 at 19:26

I try to get organic and local when I can and have been getting frozen bison (which is amazing) and wild salmon in the mail. I luckily live near great markets and green markets so I can get all the good stuff!

GRAINS. I have no problem with small amounts of raw diary products. And for strength training Raw Milk is the best.

Grains are enemy #1 as far as I am concerned.
