This past weekend I ate more carbs then usual. Not from bad sugars-- mostly fruits and starchy veggies. Yesterday I ate mostly greens and starchy veggies and bit of fat (just not in the mood to eat protein yesterday) def ate lower calories -- weighed myself this AM (yes I know the scale is EVIL) I actually was up 5 pounds WHAT THE???? Do you think it was due to carbs retaining water??

My guess is it's actually the fiber from the fruits and vegetables binding the water. Just stay hydrated and it should come off soon. :) Don't trust the scale!

I don't think it's the fiber, it's the carbohydrates/glycogen holding onto water. – mari Mar 28 2011 at 18:05
Dietary Fiber IS a Carbohydrate. It binds water as it moves through the digestive system. – StalkingMySupper Mar 28 2011 at 19:32

i can go up and down 5lbs day to day, it 100% correlates to carbs.

I'm always up a couple of pounds on Monday due to increased carbs / decreased vigilance over the weekend. Also always back down (and then some, usually) by Tues or Wed morning.

And therein lies the problem with scales. I use a scale to get a sense of the direction of change over the mid to long term, but weight is such a highly variable thing.

Just jumping onto the pile. I'm up 4 lbs today after adding in some roasted beets, carrots and potatoes over the weekend. These are things I normally do not eat and my carbs were significantly higher over the weekend (calories also much higher) It goes away quickly so nothing to worry about. ( I find drinking extra fluids at times like this helps a lot.)

exactly, mondays I find myself drinking time and a half or more of my usual water intake, it flushes me out I guess and makes the water weight fall right back off. – PKN Mar 28 2011 at 21:45

I don't know if that's what did it to you, but I always notice a significant amount of water retention if I up my carbs too high, no matter what type of carbs they are.

When was the last time you weighed yourself? I have a horrid habit of weighing EVERY DAY and stressing if it isn't down enough or heaven forbid its up.

Don't stress it - do your normal thing for a few days and reevaluate. You're right - the scale is evil, and only tells half the story in most cases.

Too many carbs make me retain so much water I can see it. When I wake up my face and lips will be swollen...

Yep, I can see it and feel it. My eyelids are swollen and my shoes/rings are much tighter. – sherpamelissa Mar 28 2011 at 15:52

I do t use the water weight unless I'm really low carb and gluten free. I mean about half a broccoli plus half an onion a day low. Blergh
